Main View: Death (the process and state) is bad.

Thesis: I will expand Nagels deprivation argument about death to further the case that death is
bad for the subject that is dying and will be dead.

Definitions:
Death: the state of complete, irreversible nonexistence of a subject, specifically whatever
the subject is inherently (opened to dualism, PCT, animalism, & no-self)
Roles: parts/positions that people play voluntarily and involuntarily -

Expansion Args:
1. Value of life (C voi i tin; c cm i xi gc)
a. No monetary value or quantitative value on life (try doing it on yourself); life has
value of
b. Life is full of good stuff (& bad stuffs that reaffirm the existence of good things)
death eliminates all those good things
2. Pre-natal nonexistence death (Qu chanh v qu bi; nuc cm v nc lc)
a. Giving v. stealing (giving lifes opportunities v. depriving those)
3. Deprivations of roles that the individual can play (bad for individual and society;
)
a. Play cannot be a play without a hero; hero cannot be a hero without the play
i.
b. Life is the infinite opportunity to play those roles to their fullest potential to
reflect the good of individual & society/world
4. Deprivation of opportunities to develop & maintain good character
a. Dead prisoner cannot redeem themselves for the wrongs they commited
b. Peoples dignity cannot be restored if they are dead (pre-Civil War slaves)
5. Deprivation of free will (Quyn v c m)
a. Good actions can only be good if there is free will no free will in death, so
no good; death eliminates any possibility of good being done

Obj 1: total $$$ spent on person during lifetime

some things have cannot have value

Personality w/ others, ideas in group projects, joy brought to others ($$$ cant buy
happiness)
Dignity & free will never came w/ cost

Obj 2: pre-natal nonexistence & post-life nonexistence are both states of nonexistence
Life is the differentiating factor where life is like a good to be enjoyed
Difference b/t empty glass w/o water & after water was drank
Afterwards, water was enjoyed but no more water to be enjoyed; no water = bad
aka thirsty (no life to look forward to w/ death)
Pre-natal nonexistence goes to good place of life; death comes down from good
place of life

Obj 3: can make amends via payment or good acts on behalf of those wronged (priority for
historically marginalized ppl like Georgetown)
Good, but can never fully restore the suffering & loss of dignity by the original victim
Wound can heal into a scar, but the scar is still there no matter how many patches
and ointment are put on it
Meaning of dignity restored when rapist is dead & cant be charged to
compensate the victim (Presentation HS rape case)
Response to obj response: what good is trying to do good then
Less evil = better; should seek better (better to treat a wound than keep it opened;
2.0 GPA v. 3.7 GPA)

Obj 4: roles are replaceable (like w/ understudy)

Substitutes can never be the same as original
Butter margarine
