Slide 3 & 4

Insects play a big rolein our community!

So lets think about this together and create a complexity scale. We are going to

name any facts that we know, and then rate them from the simplest to the most

complex and explain your rating.

What jobs do they have? (Pollinator, decomposer, and pest controller). Id put this

towards the more complex side of the scale, because they play such a big role in our

living systems.

Can you think of characteristics bugs might have? (Wings). Id put this on the more

simple side of the scale. Yes, wings allow certain species of bugs to fly.

Slide 5

This bug is by an artist named Kyle Bean. Can someone tell me something they

notice about this picture? That's very good, it is a sculpture. This artist uses only

matchsticks to create line. Who can tell me some about how he used line? (Different

lengths, directions, some are straight, some are curved).

Slide 6

Lets compare and contrast how these two artists used the same subject, but have

such different results. Think about her materials, colors, and use of line. So, Yumi

Okita, created her sculptures using only textiles and embroidery. Her sculptures are

actually quite large, about the size of a ruler.

So artists! Here is what we are going to do! Think about a bug and what role it plays

in your community and how it effects the environment. I chose a bee. Why? Because,

bees are in danger and need saving. We need bees to transfer pollen. Without them a

lot of our plants, including crops, would die off.

Slide 8

What do we need to do BEFORE we can start learning our different stitches? We

need to thread our needle! In order to do so, we are going to ask our birdie friend

for help! Here, is our birdie, and lets congratulate her, because she is a new mom.

She was sitting in her nest with her baby, when it started to cry for food. So, she flew

through the eye of the needle to find a worm. She swoops down, and chomps a long

red worm! She gets back to nest, and flies through the eye of the needle once more.

Feeding her baby the worm.

Slide 9

Now that we can thread out needle, we need to tie a knot. I want you to make a J

shape, then pull the tail over, tuck it under, and pull GENTLY. Let's practice.
