Painted Houses of the Ndebele Tribe
The Ndebeles are an African ethnic group living in South Africa and
Zimbabwe known for their artistic talent, especially with regard to their painted
houses
It is believed that early Ndebele house structure and house-painting strategies
were adopted as a result of cultural changes and intermarriages between
tribes.
The wall paintings are always done by the women. A well-painted home
indicates the female of the household is a good wife and mother
Different Colors
The black lines are painted to show the different
geometric shapes
Women of the Ndebele Tribe first paint the walls of the
houses white with mud, then color in the shapes with
bright colors.
