Mrs. Ashs 1st Grade Class

Subject Area Snapshot...

Reading: Readers use all they know about letter sounds, word patterns and sight words to read unknown
words.
As readers we recall words we know, to help us solve unknown words. By using letter sounds and word pattern
knowledge, we search from the beginning to end within a word in an effort to tackle tricky words. As readers
we are always searching for meaning, but we need strategies to help us when meaning breaks down in the form
of unknown words.
Writing: Revision
The past couple of weeks writers have been working on ways to revise their stories. They know to use a caret
for missing words, a flap for adding a sentence, and to draw a line through words or sentences that need to
be deleted, We also worked on using our senses to build our details.
Math: Combinations
Students are exploring relationships among combinations of numbers up to 10. We are working on solving a
problem in which the total and one part are known.
Science: Solids and Liquids:
Scientists finished exploring the many properties of liquids. We discussed opacity, color, feel, viscosity or flu-
idity, buoyancy in water, and miscibility in water. They loved this unit!

Holiday Party!
If you would like to plan the Christmas Party, please let me know by Wednesday, December 6. I will put a plan-
ning group email together and let you plan from there. We will have about 45 minutes for the party. The stu-
dents will be in Music prior to this time so we can start set-up at 2:00.
