Dear Reader,

This is my final portfolio for my English Composition 1101 class. Professor Piersons ENC 1101, which
would be classified as a Discourse community, was aimed towards developing a students understanding of
writing and writing studies concepts. This community engaged in the common goal of learning how to better
understand ones own writing, which was accomplished through literate activities, such as peer reviewing and
writing essays. All the papers posted in this website are essays that were assigned for the class. In order to show
my revisions and editions, I highlighted and made notes on why they were done. In addition, reflections were
also done, in order to demonstrate what I gained from each paper.

The first paper is an Autoethnography. For this assignment, I had to select a community I am or was a
part of. With this, I had to apply the concepts we learned about in class regarding Discourse communities. From
this, I came to have a better understanding of my community, its values, goals, and members.

The second paper is a Writing Process Description, Analysis, and Revision. The purpose of this
assignment was for us to better understanding our process for writing. Incorporating concepts that I learned
about general writing process, I examined my own writing style and process, to better understand why and how
I write. This was essential in being able to identify any weaknesses in my writing process and how I could
improve them, to become a better writer overall.

The third paper is a Rhetorical Analysis Paper. For this paper, a certain community was to be analyzed
in terms of how rhetoric is used within the community. For the first part of the assignment, in our selected
groups, we researched how Ethos, Pathos, and Logos is prevalent in the YouTube culinary community; and for
our text, we utilized a YouTube cooking video. The information gathered from this first part was then to be
utilized in our individual essays, as applicable. However, for the individual essay, we were to use a different
rhetorical concept to analyze the same community and text. Thus, this paper helped me gain an in-depth
understanding of varying rhetorical concepts overall.

The final paper was based on Genre Analysis and Application. For this paper, we were to find how
writing studies concepts, learned in ENC 1101, could be utilized and adapted in communities outside of this
class. We were to use these concepts to analyze a writing assignment from another class. I analyzed my film
analysis independent study from my higher level International Baccalaureate film class, from my senior year of
high school. From this assignment, I learned that writing studies concepts are dynamic and could be applicable
to class other than ENC 1101.

From these assignments, I came to better understand writing studies concepts and how they can be
applied to understand and improve my own writing. I hope that, from these papers, you can gather that I have
fully grasped these concepts. In addition, realize the significant improvement in my overall writing. I also hope
that, from the writing process essay, I was able to convey how vital it is to understand ones writing process,
especially if one is to go into a field that is writing intensive. I expect that, with the analysis and research from
each paper, I was able to demonstrate an overall understanding of writing studies concepts.

Thank you for your dedicated time,
