FORM:

Verbs ending in -e (with the exception of verbs ending in -ee and -ie) drop the - e and add ing:
hope hoping; ride riding; make making; write - writing

Verbs ending in -ee just add -ing:


agree agreeing; flee fleeing; see - seeing

Verbs ending in -ie change the -ie into y and add ing:
die dying; tie tying; lie - lying

Verbs ending in one vowel and one consonant (with the exception of w, x, and y):
For one syllable verbs double the consonant and add ing:
jog jogging; sit sitting; run running; stop - stopping

For two syllable verbs


- if the 1st syllable is stressed, just add ing:
answer answering; offer offering; listen listening; visit visiting

- if the 2nd syllable is stressed , double the consonant and add ing:
admit admitting; prefer preferring; begin beginning

USE:
Is used for:

- temporary situations:
Ann is working in London this weekend.

- changing or developing situations:


The wind is getting stronger and stronger.

- frequently repeated actions with always, constantly, continually, etc., expressing annoyance or
criticism:
He is always asking interesting questions. (Here always means constantly)

- actions happening at or around the moment of speaking:


The baby is sleeping at the moment.

- fixed arrangements in the near future:


I'm seeing Ann tonight.

TIME EXPRESSIONS:
now, at present, at the moment, today, tonight, this afternoon, this morning, this week,
this year, this part of the year,
