Text
Ferris, Dana. Multilingual Students and College Writing.

Summary
Professor Ferris highlights the struggles and obstacles a Multilingual individual faces as a
student in the United States. Those obstacles are being able to read and write effectively, as well
as following the rigorous American educational expectations. Ferris points out the common
mistakes Multilingual writers commit which are: lack of a clear objectives, the evidence is not
being supported correctly, and the standard guidelines of organizing papers are not being
followed. However, these simple literacy mistakes can be adjusted by using available resources
and also investing time in reading pieces of writing which are beneficial in the long run.

Claim
Multilingual writers should not feel discouraged because there is availble resources to
them.

Applying my knowledge which I receive from books I am assigned or even read on

my own time, in this English class, will benefit me in my future college courses by
demonstrating the evolvement of my effective writings

Data
English language itself is very complicated- it has a large vocabulary and very
complicated set of grammar (sentence structure) rules. So ML should not feel bad
about themselves even if they make errors at the college level (25).
Different students will benefit from different types of help, but it is important to
take this issue seriously and do whatever is needed to make progress (25).

Connection
In the article, Multilingual Students and College Writing, by Professor Dana Ferris, an issue was
present where multilinguals deal with a demanding stressful criteria that is obliged to be met
required by the American academic system. I believe the organization is too strict and unfair
especially since the individual already knows two languages with which both have different rules
to writing. Fortunately, Multilingual writers should not feel discouraged because there is availble
resources to them. The list is endless: a library, The Writing Center, or even a friend who is
possibly majoring in English are useful resources who could help guide us to write at a
college-level. Applying my knowledge in which I retrieved from the books that were assigned
throughout the period of this course, or even read on my own time, will benefit my success as an
effective writer in the remainder years of my college experience.Ferris includes, English
language itself is very complicated- it has a large vocabulary and very complicated set of
grammar (sentence structure) rules. So ML should not feel bad about themselves even if they
make errors at the college level (25). More-or-so this quote illustrates to the audience that
multilinguals have high complex standards, in the U.S., and are given jarring judgement which
puts a person in a pressure type of situation. Setting high standards encourages the ML to seek
out for available resources benefitting their increase of knowledge. Also, merciful judgment will
be given if they see improvement. Later throughout the article, Ferris also mentions how
everyone is different in understanding what is required from them,Different students will
benefit from different types of help, but it is important to take this issue seriously and do
whatever is needed to make progress (25).It is important to accept that it is a challenge to write
a paper with the absence of errors, but it is the time invested in resources in which an ML writer
will claim as success.
