Lesson Idea Name: Learning about Insects

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): Second
Content Standard Addressed: S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life
cycles of different living organisms. C) . Construct an explanation of an animals role in dispersing
seeds or in the pollination of plants.

Technology Standard Addressed: Creative Communicator

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: Bugscope

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom (Minimum 2 paragraph overview):
We would start off by talking about how certain insects transfer pollen seeds from plant to plant with their
legs and on their backs. Then we would collect an insect to send to the scientist at Bugscope for them to
dissect in front of the class on the projection. This would lead for us to talk to the scientist about how the
insect we are inspecting would be able to disperse the pollen.

The Bugscope scientist is the perfect site for the students to learn not just about how pollen is dispersed by
insects but where it is dispersed on the actual insect on the microscope. The scientist can then show them
where they take the pollen and how it allows the other plants bloom and grow and create more plants. The
students will then have to create a report about what they saw with the dissection and how a bug pollinates
other plants.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Students would need access to the SMARTboard or Promethean ActivBoard to be able to watch and talk to
the scientist on the computer.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Through Bugscope they are able to talk to a scientist and ask him or her questions and watch
them dissect the insect we find.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): The student-centered learning and knowledge creation
in this project is that they are picking out what insect to send in and what questions they want to ask
the scientist.
c. Higher-order thinking: They are using higher-order thinking because they are having to evaluate a
bugs life and think about how they are pollinating other planting and creating their own research with
asking questions.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: The students
will not be publishing work other than the work they turn in for a grade to the teacher.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: How could you implement this proposed learning
experience and still comply with your districts Internet Safety and Student Privacy policies?
I can implement this proposed learning experience and still comply with safety and privacy concerns by
making sure that each scientist has a background check. Making sure that the administration and parents
know what we will be doing in the video conference and if a parent doesnt want their childs face shown
he/she can wear a mask to cover their face. Make sure that Bugscope isnt recording the conversation at all to
protect the students safety. Then to always make sure not to say what school the student goes to or where it
is located.
