Selecting objects is the first phase of using the Drawing Cleanup tools.

This drawing contains

examples of typical drawing problems which are addressed using drawing cleanup. For example,

here is an example of clustered nodes. Clustered nodes are either the endpoints of lines, or points

themselves which are close to each other but have not been properly snapped together.

Here, is an example of undershoots. You can see that the line has not extended completely to the

perpendicular line. This is often found where property lines don't reach all the way out to right-of-way

lines in a parcel map.

Crossing objects are lines that cross each other, but are not broken where they intersect.

Duplicates are difficult to see because they are exactly what the name describes-objects that are

coincident to each other. In this case, there are actually two lines of the same length, sharing the

same endpoints.

Short objects are line segments or polyline segments which fall within the tolerance that's been set.

Pseudo-nodes are line segments which have coincident endpoints, but those endpoints are not

necessary because there is not a third line extending from them. When you select one of these lines,

notice that it is an individual object. In this example, what should be a single element in the map is

actually made up of four separate objects.

And finally, notice that this circle has been drawn with a diameter of 1 unit. This is here to illustrate

how tolerances are used within drawing cleanup. Drawing errors, such as clustered nodes,

undershoots and short objects, all make use of a tolerance setting. When you perform these drawing

cleanup processes, you'll use this tolerance value. If the drawing problems fall within that tolerance,

then AutoCAD Map considers them to be an error. If they are outside of this tolerance, they are

considered to be correct geometry within the map.

Next, on the ribbon, Home tab, AutoCAD Layers panel, open the Layer Properties Manager. Notice

the four layers in this drawing: Layer 0, Demonstration, Text, and Tolerance. You be making use of

the Demonstration layer during the drawing cleanup selection phase. Click Close.

Then, on the ribbon, Tools tab, in the Map Edit panel, click Clean Up. This starts the Drawing

Cleanup wizard. On the Select Objects page, notice that there are two areas: Objects to include in the
drawing cleanup, and Objects to anchor in the drawing cleanup.

In the Objects to include area, there are two options: Select all or Select manually. Select all selects

all the objects for you at once, and Select manually enables you to select individual objects within the

drawing. For this exercise, choose Select all and then filter by layer. Click the Layers button. Since all

of the errors are on the Demonstration layer, select that, and then click Select.
Next, look at the Objects to anchor area. If you have an object in your drawing that you do not want to

edit, you can click the Select manually button, and then, in the drawing, select a single object which

you don't want to have moved. In this case, the other two clustered nodes will be snapped to this

anchored object. This maintains the integrity of the anchored object.
