Art 133 Unit 1 Paper

An Overview of structures and systems and the 21st century approach standards based. Dorn said

When art was first introduced into the public schools in Boston by William Bentley Fowle, its purpose

was its supposed disciplinary value in training the eye, hand, and perceptual faculties. This directly

related to the importance of the standards based approach to teaching art education because art plays a

huge role in the development of the students performance in every aspect of education. The skits

performed in class was a great way to understand the different types of standards that we will be held to

for our students.

Elliot Eisner developed a system of lessons the Arts Teach and I can use these in my future

classroom to make sure I am using these standards for my students. The arts teach children to make good

judgements about qualitative relationships. Unlike much of the curriculum in which correct answers and

rules prevail, in the arts, it is judgment rather than rules that prevail (Eisner, 2002). Since structures and

systems can be interpreted in many ways, this concept gives children freedom to create and judge their

own art. I loved seeing how children can grade themselves and their effort in their work and I will use this

tactic in my future classroom.
