Background information
NEWTONS FIRST LAW INERTIA
An object will continue to stay at rest (static The resistance of any physical
equilibrium), or continue to move at constant object to any change in its state of
speed(dynamic equilibrium) unless acted upon motion.
by an external/additional forces.

HOW THEY RELATED?

Newton's first law and the concept of inertia is closely related. In
fact, Newton's first law can also called 'law of inertia'. These two
concepts suggest that object will continue to be in one state of
motion and resisted the change unless there is another force that
exert on the object. These two law are almost the same, only law of
inertia is stated by Galileo and Newtons first law is stated by
Newton.

How Inertia is a key acting element in the
demonstration and newtons first law?
As shown in the demonstration, when we pulled the tray quickly, the egg did not accelerate because there was not enough time for the
friction force to act on the egg inertia. Normally, friction between egg and toilet paper roll would make the egg move along with the roll,
however, when we pulled the tray quickly, the inertia resist the weak friction and cause the egg to stay where it was ,resisting change in
state of motion.

First, when we pulled the tray, we applied the force to the toilet roll. Although we pulled the tray quickly and the applied force overcame
friction force, the reason why toilet paper moved slightly along with applied force was because the toilet paper roll has less inertia (less
mass), and partly because the bulged edge of the tray pulled it along. This situation was similar to the ball in a wagon that we once did.
(After that, the toilet roll fell down to the side as shown in the diagram because of air resistance against the direction it was moving
toward (along with applied force)).

Second, the egg has more inertia because it has more mass. Moreover, the force that pull the egg along with the toilet roll is nearly
nonexistent since the roll was falling quickly itself.

Eventually, the eggs dropped to the glass because of its weight. According to Newtons first law, the egg moved down because it was not
in equilibrium since its weight is more than the air resistance. The egg behave exactly like what Newtons first law states: it did not move
(and resisted to move), unless there is an additional force act on it, which in this case, is its weight. In other word, inertia play an important
role in explaining Newtons first law which is essentially existed because of the resistance to change its state of motion.
