Cooperative learning Lesson

I. Describe the class:

The class is 20 students in second grade. There are no gifted, or learning disabled

children. There is three second language learners.

II. Subject/Skills:

Math skills- Mastering Place value

III. Objectives:

Children will master their skills on place value by rolling a single die and placing that

number on paper in a place value spot. After activity students should have 87% of the

place value skills mastered.

IV. Procedures:

1. State the objectives and orient student to the lesson: I will be using group

goals/positive interdependence for this lesson.

Today the class is going to take a single die to learn the place value system. We will

do this rolling the die and placing whatever number we roll into a spot. When our

spaces are filled, we will see who has the highest number and that group will get a

point when a group reaches 5 points we will then be done and that group will get an

extra 5 minutes of free time.

2. Review Prerequisites:

Students will already have to know what the place value names are and what the

definition of them are. They will know these terms from previous skills learned on

place value.

3. Modeling:

I as the teacher will explain how the activity will work then I will put each child in a

group randomly selecting them. Then we will begin the activity.

4. Conducting Learning Probes/Guided Practice:

If students have questions I will be walking around the room making sure that all

children are participating and writing on their own paper. I will be making sure that

they are taking turns with their die and not arguing over it.

5. Independent Student Practice:

Will check throughout activity that the students understand what they are writing and

what the place values are by asking questions like, what place did you put the 5 in?

V. Materials:

Pencil, Paper, and 5 dice (one for each group of four).

VI. Grouping Structure:

The grouping structure will be held in the classroom in five groups of four that will be

randomly selected.

VII. Modifications:

Modifications for English language learners will be by pointing to examples of what they

need to do while explaining the activity slowly. I will explain the activity slower to make

sure all students understand what they are to do. I will put my English learners in a group
where they can learn off the other children. So, one English learner will be with three

English speaking children, there will be three groups like this.

VIII. Assessment:

6. Assessing student progress/culminating or closing activity:

I will know how the students have met the objectives by writing a number on the

board and pointing to a number and asking children what place value that number

has. Once children have mastered how to tell the place value of thousands then we

can move on to millions. I will gather the data of mastery by students by asking them

on a quiz of five questions if 87% of their answers are correct they have mastered the

skill.

7. Distributed Practice and review:

I will assign homework with higher place values for each child. They can practice

new material and the follow week we will review the place values up to one thousand.
