The intent of this standard is that
students will understand that good
handwriting is an important tool of
written communication. Neat and
legible handwriting is well received
by the reader, while messy, hard-to-
read writing may lead to
misunderstanding.
Although cursive letters are often
introduced in second grade, it is at
the third-grade level that the
transition from manuscript to cursive
should be completed.
Toward this long-term goal of
developing legible, neat, rapid
handwriting, this standard focuses on
students developing and practicing
good handwriting habits, such as
proper posture, paper position, and
pencil grip.
4.8 The student will edit writing for correct
grammar, capitalization, spelling, punctuation,
sentence structure, and paragraphing.
