San Jose Animal Care Center

2750 Monterey Road
San Jose, CA 95111

Dear Ms. St Gregory:

Thank you so much for the opportunity to work with the San Jose Animal Care Center. Our
group is excited to help support the organization with its long-term needs, especially after
visiting the shelter and falling in love with all of the animals.

As students from Santa Clara University, we chose to form Animal Allies Consulting to help
make a contribution. We understand that the San Jose Animal Care Center does not receive
sufficient funding to support the number of animals it fosters, and the extensive services
the organization provides.

To meet the need for an increase in exposure and funding, our team is confident in
delivering the organization long-term solutions and are passionate in helping support the
animals in our local community. We plan to create long-term connections in the community
by seeking sponsorships with local companies who are willing to support the shelter.

Creating long-term connections in the community helps meet the Care Centers biggest
needs and we appreciate the opportunity to partner with you, and welcome a partnership.
Our team is excited about the opportunity to promote the mission of the organization.

Sincerely,
Animal Allies Consulting
Richard Daly, Connor Ohira, Christy Pierce, Larissa Sun, Nikki Zozula

Executive Summary

In the United States, nearly 7 million animals are taken into shelters annually when
residents lose or willingly surrender their pets. Many are left at great personal cost to
owners, who for many reasons are no longer able to provide for them.

Five fellow Leavey School of Business students founded Animal Allies Consulting in
October 2017 to help the local city shelter. Upon investigation, we came to realize that the
San Jose Animal Care Center is significantly underfunded by the city and heavily relies on
donations to continue its operations. Our mission is to assist the San Jose Animal Care
Center by creating long term relationships with local businesses and schools. Through
these relationships, the animal shelter will gain increased support and funding .

Objective: Establish Pipelines with community

We will approach local businesses to encourage them to support and donate to the
animal shelter. Community businesses will be able to donate directly through the San Jose
Animal Care Center website. Alternatively, they will be offered the option to host a
fundraiser, through which they can donate a percentage of the proceeds to the shelter.

The fundraisers will provide the additional benefit of raising community awareness.
By promoting our fundraisers to Washington Elementary School and Buchser Middle
School, we aim to inspire the younger generations to volunteer at the animal shelter.

Through our efforts, we will be creating a positive impact on the entire community.
Businesses that decide to donate will receive a certificate to display their support of the
shelter to customers. This will not only improve the public images of the local businesses
within the community, but also spread more awareness to local consumers.

Introduction to Problem/Need

What is the San Jose Animal Care Center?

The San Jose Animal Care Center (SJACC) is a
government-owned animal shelter that supports many of its
neighboring cities, such as Milpitas, Los Gatos, Cupertino, and
Saratoga. It was created by the City of San Jose in 2001 when
the Humane Society of Silicon Valley notified the city that it
could no longer continue providing shelter to for Santa Clara
County. Fostering about 1,000-1,500 animals at one time, the
SJACC has now become the largest animal shelter on the West
Coast that cares for its animals all under one roof.

What does the San Jose Animal Care Center do?

Creating a welcoming environment for all animals that need a home is what the
SJACC strives to do. Animal bites/diseases, road accidents, and overpopulation are all
reasons why it is so important that stray animals are not left homeless. To protect and
foster these animals, the SJACC rescues, provides shelter, and offers various services for
animals in need. Some of the services they provide include vaccinations, spaying and
neutering, surgeries, and physical examinations.

How can the animal shelter be improved?

The animal shelter is committed to making animal services and adoptions affordable
to the entire community. Being a government owned organization, the shelter does not
receive proper funds from taxes to support the wide variety of services it offers. In order to
keep the cost of animal services and adoptions affordable, the shelter relies on community
donations that go directly into daily operating costs. By prioritizing the daily functions of
the animal shelter, the SJACC does not often spend money on items that would improve the
overall quality and awareness of the shelter. We hope to establish sponsorships for the
SJACC to provide money that can be used outside of general donations to purchase
long-term assets. These assets will enhance the quality and functionality of the shelter as
well as spread awareness about the amazing things that the SJACC is doing for the
community.

All animals deserve the chance to find a good home.

Rationale
City Animal Shelters Need Help!
City animal shelters are often a low priority among urgent city needs. The SJACC
provides many other services other than rescue and adoption, which require a significant
amount of capital. One of their major current needs is a topiary to be placed on the
sidewalk in front of the shelter to serve as an identifiable marker and draw people into the
care center.

Project Detail
In order to create community support for the care center, Santa Clara Animal Allies
will approach local businesses and ask if they would be willing to sponsor the San Jose
Animal Care Center through either donations or fundraiser hosting. Santa Clara Animal
Allies will utilize its combined networks as SCU students to promote each fundraiser via
social media, word of mouth, and flyers. A byproduct of hosting fundraisers will be
increased public awareness. The spreading of awareness will lead to an increase in private
donations, adoption rates and volunteer interest.

Risk Management
By reaching out to small local businesses, Santa Clara Animal Allies will be able to
speak directly to owners and decision makers. This approach will allow us the freedom of
not having to work with large corporations, which have long turn-around periods. Each
business profit margin will be smaller, leaving them with less money to donate. The risk of
collecting smaller donations will be hedged by the establishment of multiple long-term
pipelines. Local businesses will be incentivized to donate because their consumer
perception will be improved through their philanthropy.

6
Deliverables

Certificate
A certificate will be given to participating
business for customers to acknowledge their support.
This certificate can be used to place on their window,
wall, or bulletin board to give the business an
incentive to contribute to the community, and a way
for customers to know that they have donated to a
good cause. The certificate will read We support San
Jose Animal Shelter in large letters with the
organizations logo on it and a small statement on the
bottom of the page. The certificate will also create
awareness for the San Jose Animal Care Center, since
people will read and pass the certificate on a daily basis. A copy of the certificate is shown
to the right.

Public Outreach
Animal Allies Consulting Team reached out to many restaurants, in order to find
businesses that were willing to participate. A general letter was created, that described our
project and ideas, and we then tailored it for each businesses. Each of us brainstormed
local, community- based businesses that we believed would be willing to help. Many
businesses were not able to sponsor the shelter long-term, so we had to change the
wording and proposals within the letter. Ultimately, we provided options for businesses,
allowing them to either donate a small, flat fee for 6 months, or host one or more
fundraisers.

Video
Animal Allies Consulting Team created a video about the San Jose Animal Care
Shelter to show potential sponsors. The video is 1 minute and 40 seconds, short enough to
not take up too much time, but long enough for businesses to understand the objectives of
the SJACC. The video includes facts about the shelter, with clips of the SJACC and rescued
animals in the background.

9
Cost Analysis

This project is extremely cost-efficient by gaining monthly sponsorships, donations,

and low-cost fundraisers for the SJACC. With multiple companies involved, Animal Allies
Consulting will raise a substantial amount of money for the SJACC. The goal is not simply to
raise money, but to provide funds for the SJACC to buy a topiary that will draw people in,
and reptile lamps that will keep rooms of animals warm.

The only direct costs this project will require are the certificates that will be
distributed to the partnering companies and wages for the consultants. As a small token of
our gratitude, these charitable companies will receive a certificate to remind them of the
impact theyre making. The consulting rates are $11.10 per hour, which is the minimum
wage in Santa Clara County. Total costs for the project will amount to $566.00.

10
Project Success Metrics

The metrics used to measure success for this proposal are based on funds raised.
We set a baseline amount of $600 to ensure that the SJACC would have a sufficient amount
of money to buy the items on the proposed budget, and that has been met and exceeded
with the help of many generous companies.

The target for participating companies was two, and that baseline has been met and
exceeded. Annies Vietnamese Sandwiches, Wicked Chicken, and Ono Poke Bowl have
generously provided donations amounting to a total of $480. There are also two
fundraisers with The Sub Hub and Mission City Creamery set up. The Sub Hub fundraiser is
expected to gross around $100 and the Mission City Creamery fundraiser is projected to
gross around $200. These projections are based on previous fundraisers. Along with the
money, a proposed budget will also be included to show where to allocate the money. The
main priority now becomes holding these companies accountable for their donations.

Appendix: Letter to Businesses

Dear ________

We are Santa Clara University Leavey School of Business students who were assigned a
community consulting project. To make a lasting difference in the community, we are
finding local businesses who would be willing to help support the San Jose Animal Care
Shelter. This collaboration would help increase awareness for your company and motivate
your customers to support a business that supports the community.

Our passion for animals led us to form a partnership with the SJACC, the largest animal
shelter on the west coast. Since the Care Center is a government-run organization, the
amount of money they receive is unable to cover all of the costs required to care for the
countless animals it fosters. The vast majority of the money used for the care center comes
from generous donations. Establishing a long-term connection with the shelter would help
meet its biggest needs.

We are asking if you would be willing to support the San Jose Animal Care Center by
donating a fixed monthly donation for 6 months or hosting fundraising events at least once
a year. Our team will also be providing a certificate that you can proudly hang and present
as a small token of appreciation from both us and the shelter.

We hope that you will consider developing a relationship with the San Jose Animal Care
Center, and our team has high hopes that we will make a difference through this process.
Please let us know by October 20th if you will be willing to help support the Animal
Care Center.

Sincerely,

Larissa Sun, Christy Pierce, Richard Daly, Nikki Zozula, and Connor Ohira
