Guidelines for settings of Back up Directional O/C relays :

1. Conditions to be simulated :

a. Mid line fault (at 50% of line length)

b. Line end fault with the remote end breaker open.
c. Above faults with the parallel line out,if any.
d. Remote end bus fault ,with parallel line out ,if any.

2. Timing checks to be done on mid line fault current & bus fault current(max).

3. Time for above max. bus fault current should be more than 0.7 sec(dist. relay zone-3 timing),
at the same time the time for mid line fault should not be less than 0.45sec (dist. relay zone-2
timing + 100msec)

4. Instantaneous element settings should be for 1.3 times the max. bus fault current so that the
relay will not overreach to the next line.
