ANSWERS WITH EXPLANATIONS

1. Answer: B. 27.5 years
Explanation:
Let age of Rohan be y
Rahul is 15 years elder than Rohan = (y + 15). So Rahul’s age 5 years ago = (y + 15 – 5)
Rohan’s age before 5 years = (y – 5)
5 years ago, Rahul is 3 times as old as Rohan
(y + 15 – 5) = 3 (y – 5)
(y + 10) = (3y – 15)
2y = 25
y = 12.5
Rohan’s age = 12.5 years
Rahul’s age = (y + 15) = (12.5 + 15) = 27.5 years

2. Answer: C. 31 years
Explanation:
Hint: If ages in the numerical are mentioned in ratio A : B, then A : B will be Ax and Bx.
We are given that age ratio of Harry : Pitter = 5 : 6
Harry’s age = 5x and Peter’s age = 6x
One year ago, their age was 5x and 6x. Hence at present, Harry’s age = 5x +1 and Peter’s age =
6x +1
After 4 years,
Harry’s age = (5x +1) + 4 = (5x + 5)
Peter’s age = (6x +1) + 4 = (6x + 5)
After 4 years, this ratio becomes 6 : 7. Therefore,
Harry’s Age / 6 = Peter’s Age / 7
(5x + 5) / (6x + 5) = 6 / 7
7 (5x + 5) = 6 (6x + 5)
35 x + 35 = 36x + 30
36x – 35x = 35 – 30
x=5
Peter’s present age = (6x + 1)
= (6 * 5) + 1
= 30 + 1
= 31 years

3. Answer: C. 10

6
Explanation:
Clearly,
x+15 = 5(x-5)
x + 15 = 5x – 25
5x – x = 25 + 15
4x = 40
x = 40 / 4
x = 10
4. Answer: B. 24.5
Explanation:
If Rahul age is x, then Sachin age is x-7,
so (x-7)/x = 7/9
9(x – 7) = 7x
9x-63 = 7x
9x – 7x = 63
2x = 63
x = 31.5
So Sachin age is 31.5 - 7 = 24.5

5. Answer: A. 7 : 8
Explanation:
Let P age and Q age is 6x years and 7x years.
Then 7x - 6x = 4
x=4
So required ratio will be (6x+4): (7x+4)
=> 28:32
=> 7:8

6.Answer: A. Rs. 600

Explanation:
Let the sum be Rs . 100 then
S.I. = Rs.(100 x 5 x 2)/100
= Rs. 10
C.I = Rs. [{100 x (1 + 5/100)2} - 100]
= Rs. 41/4
∴ Difference between C.I and S.I = Rs. (41/4 - 10)
= Rs. 0.25
⇒ 0.25 : 150 : : 100 : P
∴ P = (1.50 x 100) / 0.25 = Rs. 600

7. Answer: C. Rs. 160

Explanation:
Let the principle is P
so compound interest = p x ( 1 + (12.5/100))sup>2 - p = 170
⇒ p x (112.5/100) x (112.5/100) - p = 170
⇒ P [ 12656.25 - 10000 ] = 170 x 10000
∴ p = (170 x 10000) / 2656.25
Simple interest SI = (P x T x R )/100
= [{(170 x 10000) / 2656.25} x 2 x 12.5] / 100

7
= 160

8. Answer: A. 6
Explanation:
6C + 2M = 6days
36C + 12M = 1 days
Again 1M = 2C
∴ 36+(12*2) = 1 day
60 children can do the work in 1 day
Now, 5 men = 10 children
∴ 10 children can do the work in 6 days.

9. Answer: D. Rs. 6400

Explanation:
Let the sum invested in Scheme A be Rs. x.
And that in Scheme B be Rs. (13900 - x).
Then, [(x * 14 * 2) / 100] + {[(13900 - x) * 11 * 2] / 100 } = 3508
(28x / 100) + [(13900 - x) * 22] / 100 = 3508
28x + [(13900 - x) * 22] = 3508 * 100
28x + [(13900 - x) * 22] = 350800
28x + 305800 – 22x = 350800
28x – 22x = 350800 – 305800
6x = 45000
x = 7500
So, sum invested in Scheme B = Rs. (13900 – 7500)
= Rs. 6400.

10. Answer: B. 6
Explanation:
Work done by 6 men = work done by 10 women.
Work done by 1 man = work done by 10 / 6 = 5/3 women
∴ 12 men + 5 women = 12 x ( 5 / 3) + 5 = 25 women
∴ W1 * D 1 = W2 * D2 [W = women, D=days]
10 * 15 = 25 * D2
D2 = 6

11. Answer: D. 8/15

Explanation:
A's 1 day's work = 1/15
B's 1 day's work = 1/20
(A + B)'s 1 day's work = (1/15) + (1/20)
= (4+3) / 60
= 7/60
(A + B)'s 4 day's work = (7/60) * 4 = 7/15
Therefore, Remaining work = 1 – (7/15)
= 8/15

1392 - 364 = 2x + 4
1028 = 2x + 4
2x = 1028 – 4
2x = 1024
2x = 210
x = 10

19. Answer: B. 1284

Explanation:
√4761 + 85 * 26 – 27² – 35% of 760 = x

36% of 550 – 14% of 650 + 35% of 420 – 55% of 380 = x
[(36/100) * 550] – [(14/100) * 650] + [(35/100) * 420] – [(55/100) * 380] = x
198 – 91 + 147 – 209 = x
45 = x
x = 45

21. Answer: D. 761

Explanation:
26 * 37 + 47% of 250 – 65% of 490 = x
x = 962 + [(47/100) * 250] -[(65/100) * 490] = x
x = 962 + 117.5 – 318.5
x = 761

22. Answer: E. 1539

Explanation:
43[3060/ (26+59)] – 2592/ (16 * 18) = x
x = 43(3060/85) – 2592/288
x = 43*36 – 9
x = 1539
23. Answer: E. 1626
Explanation:
54.02% of 649.98 + 45.09 * 31.909 – 22.03% of 750.009 = x
Approximately, 54.02 = 54
649.98 = 650

10
45.09 = 45
31.909 = 32
22.03 = 22
750.009 = 750
x = 54.02% of 649.98 + 45.09 * 31.909 – 22.03% of 750.009
x = [(54/100) * 650] + (45 * 32) – [(22/100) * 750]
x = 351 + 1440 – 165
x = 1626

24. Answer: B . 997

Explanation:
The patteren is 5³ – 3 , 6³ – 3, 7³ – 3, 8³ – 3 , 9³ – 3, 10³ – 3,....
i.e, 5³ – 3 = 125 – 3 = 122
6³ – 3 = 216 – 3 = 213
7³ – 3 = 343 – 3 = 340
8³ – 3 = 512 – 3 = 509
9³ – 3 = 729 – 3 = 726
10³ – 3 = 1000 – 3 = 997
So, the missing number is 997.

25. Answer: C .1457

Explanation:
The patteren is +(25 * 1² ), + (24 * 2²), +(25 * 3²), +(25 * 4²), + ( 25 * 5² )....
i.e, 82 + (25 * 1² ) = 82 + 25 = 107
107+(25 * 2²) = 107 + 100 = 207
207 + (25 * 3²) = 207 + 225 = 432
432 + (25 * 4²) = 432 + 400 = 832
832 + ( 25 * 5² ) = 832 + 625 = 1457.
So, the missing number is 1457.

26. Answer: B . 244

Explanation:
Each number in the series is 2 less than thrice the preceding number.
i.e, (4 * 3) – 2 = 12 – 2 = 10
(10 * 3) – 2 =30 – 2 = 28
( 28 * 3) – 2 = 84 – 2 = 82
( 82 * 3) – 2 = 246 – 2 = 244
( 244 * 3) – 2 = 732 – 2 = 730
So, the missing number is 244.

27. Answer: A . 25
Explanation:
The pattern is + 4, + 8, + 12, + 16, ......
i.e, 1 +4 = 5
5 + 8 = 13
13 + 12 = 25
25 + 16 = 41
41 + 20 = 61
So, the missing number is 25.

11
28. Answer: B . 26
Explanation:
1² + 1 = 2
2² - 1 = 3
3² + 1 = 10
4² - 1 = 15
5² + 1 = 26.
So, the missing number is 26.

29. Answer: B. 25 days

Explanation:
Work done by P and Q in 1 day = 1/10
Work done by R in 1 day = 1/50
Work done by P, Q and R in 1 day = 1/10 + 1/50 = 6/50
But Work done by P in 1 day = Work done by Q and R in 1 day . Hence the above equation can
be written as
Work done by P in 1 day × 2 = 6/50
Work done by P in 1 day = 3/50
Work done by Q and R in 1 day = 3/50
Hence work done by Q in 1 day = 3/50 – 1/50 = 2/50 = 1/25
So Q alone can do the work in 25 days

30. Answer: A. 37 ½ days

Explanation:
Work done by A in 20 days = 80/100
= 8/10
= 4/5
Work done by A in 1 day = (4/5) / 20
= 4/100
= 1/25 --- (1)
Work done by A and B in 3 days = 20/100
= 1/5 (Because remaining 20% is done in 3 days by A and B)
Work done by A and B in 1 day = 1/15 ---(2)
Work done by B in 1 day = 1/15 – 1/25
= 2/75
B can complete the work in 75/2 days = 37 ½ days.

31. Answer: C. 1:00 pm

Explanation:
Work done by P in 1 hour = 1/8
Work done by Q in 1 hour = 1/10
Work done by R in 1 hour = 1/12
Work done by P,Q and R in 1 hour = (1/8) + (1/10 ) + (1/12)
= 37/120
Work done by Q and R in 1 hour = (1/10) + (1/12)
= 22/120
= 11/60
From 9 am to 11 am, all the machines were operating.

12
i.e, they all operated for 2 hours and work completed = 2 × (37/120) = 37/60
Pending work = 1- (37/60)
= 23/60
Hours taken by Q an R to complete the pending work = (23/60) / (11/60) = 23/11
which is approximately equal to 2
Hence the work will be completed approximately 2 hours after 11 am ; ie around 1 pm.

32. Answer: D. 6
Explanation:
Work done by P in 1 day = 1/18
Work done by Q in 1 day = 1/15
Work done by Q in 10 days = 10/15 = 2/3
Remaining work = 1 – (2/3) = 1/3
Number of days in which P can finish the remaining work = (1/3) / (1/18) = 6

33. Answer: B. 40
Explanation:
Work done by 4 men and 6 women in 1 day = 1/8
Work done by 3 men and 7 women in 1 day = 1/10
Let 1 man does m work in 1 day and 1 woman does w work in 1 day. The above equations can
be written as
4m + 6w = 1/8---(1)
3m + 7w = 1/10 ---(2)
Solving equation (1) and (2) , we get m=11/400 and w=1/400
Amount of work 10 women can do in a day = 10 × (1/400) = 1/40
i.e, 10 women can complete the work in 40 days

34. Answer: A. 60
Explanation:
Amount of work done by A and B in 1 day = 1/30
Amount of work done by A and B in 20 days = 20 × (1/30) = 20/30 = 2/3
Remaining work = 1 – (2/3) = 1/3
A completes 1/3 work in 20 days
Amount of work A can do in 1 day = (1/3)/20 = 1/60
A can complete the work in 60 days
