• descriptive information
• installation procedures
• commissioning procedures
• operating, administration and provisioning procedures
• maintenance procedures
This basic grouping is used to help the user determine the particular Northern
Telecom Publication (NTP) to reference for information. To assist in this a 10
digit code is used to identify an NTP and the last three digits of this code
indicate the particular NTP and its group.
There are also two additional sources of NTP information in this publication:
The List of Terms defines common terms and abbreviations used in TN-16X
documentation and is contained in Chapter 2.
Each NTP has an Index which provides a source of keywords that you can use
to search for information. These individual indexes are combined to form the
Master Topical Index in Chapter 3.
Description (Group 1)
This group is for strategic and current planners, provisioners, transmission
engineers, and network administrators. It provides a description of the
equipment, alarms and surveillance features, system applications and
performance specifications. The publications in this group are:
Installing (Group 2)
This group is intended for the installer. It places strong on visual information
in addition to the instructions needed to install the racks, subracks, and
cabling. The publications in this group are:
The Common Procedures NTP gives those operations which are either used
on many occassions or as part of other procedures. Although it is shown as
part of the O, A and P group, many of the operations are also used as part of
the maintenance procedures of group 5.
Maintenance (Group 5)
This group contains the information needed for maintenance purposes. The
publications in this group are:
Ordering information
You can order Release 5 TN-16X documentation in three different formats.
Complete documentation sets can be ordered using the following codes:
Individual NTPs can be ordered by quoting the NTP code as listed in the
tables shown on the previous pages and adding a further three characters as
described below to indicate the format and product release number.
• for B5 Wir-O bound the 10 digit number is followed by the letter ‘B’
• for A4 ring bound the 10 digit number is followed by the letter ‘A’
• for CD-ROM the 10 digit number is followed by the letter ‘C’.
The last two characters are numbers indicating the product release number.
For example product Release 5 will use the numbers 5 after the format
character.

Note: The lasers normally operate in the Class 1 band and only enter Class
3A under worst case fault conditions.
Design features
Normal operating conditions. Under normal operating conditions each
optical fibre section is essentially a closed system permitting no human access
to optical radiation.
As the type of optical connectors used on all the systems do not involve the
use of lenses, both the above conditions can be considered to be equivalent,
i.e. the safety consideration is equivalent to that for an exposed fibre end.
Servicing. The optical units are not intended for servicing by the user. In the
event of a fault, the optical units must be returned to Nortel plc for repair or
replacement.
System operating levels. Laser output powers are set up and controlled
within ±0.5 dB of nominal during manufacture.
The optical output power level above is the mean power value which is the
most onerous from the safety point of view.
Identification. Laser output warning labels are fixed to the optical cards on
laser based systems. The label is positioned close to the optical connector
output.
This symbol is used on optical transmitter cards to alert you to the relevant
safety precautions detailed in the handbook 2
For a Class 3A laser product the laser products safety standard EN60825-1
requires the following caution to be given;
CAUTION
LASER RADIATION
DO NOT STARE INTO BEAM OR VIEW
DIRECTLY WITH OPTICAL INSTRUMENTS.
CLASS 3A LASER PRODUCT
A caution label similar to the following may appear on some of the older
TN-16X optical circuit packs.
Caution
Avoid direct exposure to
beam. Invisible light can
blind. keep all optical
connectors capped
When not connected, fit all optical plugs and couplings with
captive caps.
CAUTION
Damage to optical fibres
When dressing fibres, take care not to exceed the minimum
bend radius (typically 35 mm) and do not overtighten tyraps
used for dressing as damage may result.
WARNING
Danger from glass chips
If there is any suspicion of a glass chip in the eye, seek medical
attention at once.
Handle optical fibres carefully and always position them in a safe and secure
location during installation.
• Do not handle pieces of cut fibre with bare fingers. Use tweezers, or the
sticky side of a piece of vinyl tape, to pick up and discard any loose fibre
ends.
• All fibre cuttings should be placed in a plastic bottle provided for that
purpose.
The problem occurs when static is rapidly discharged either through the
2
equipment or via the equipment covers and adjacent metalwork.
