2. Intended audience:
a. Small group (10-15) teacher inquiry preferred
i. Smaller numbers of teachers/counselors allows for a more in-depth sharing experience (groups of 4-5)
ii. Larger numbers of teachers/counselors can be accommodated but will make for more difficult time
understanding full concept
b. Large group (25-30) parent inquiry
i. Because some of the material relates specifically to teachers, it can be omitted from parent
presentation.
ii. Small group breakout sessions will be omitted in parent inquiry group.
3. Presentation Details
a. Teacher Presentation
i. Teachers will sit in groups of 4-5 and provided a list of resources for websites and texts related to TAG,
Competition, and Pressure.
ii. Teachers will be also be provided with an outline of the presentation for note taking during
presentation
b. Parents Presentation - will meet in mass. No mall groups.
c. Facilitators will:
i. Direct participants to the resources provided for further inquiry and briefly explain their
importance/use.
ii. Direct participants to the provided notes. Questions during presentation should also be written here.
iii. Ask participants to consider the first series of general questions about competition: “What are the
benefits of being competitive? “What can make it negative?” “Are we all the same type?” “How can
competitiveness be useful?”
1. Participants will answer these questions in their small groups.
2. Facilitators will ask participants to share each answer in 20-30 seconds each.
iv. Explain Anxiety in Competition. Provide examples from teaching and personal experience. Ask for
teachers/parents to consider their own experiences.
v. Play coping techniques video. This should be an especially helpful for resources shared with students.
1. Participants will complete breathing exercises in video
2. Short debrief.
vi. Play “Types of Competitors” clips. Ask participants to write names of students who match “Types of
Competitors”.
vii. Summarize information on TAG competition in the typical classroom. What steps can we agree to take
in order to ensure a healthy competitive environment? What should we avoid?
viii. Dismiss participants with an exit ticket identifying which type of competitor they are AND which type
of competitor do they struggle with most in the classroom.
