FADE IN
1 EXT. PROTEST - DAY 1
Jimmy walks toward a large group of PROTESTERS. Someone
orates from a stage. The protesters chant as he takes
photographs with his CAMERA. Jimmy pulls out a small SIGN
with a rolodex of different slogans and turns to one that
reads: FIGHT THE PATRIARCHY. He motions for the camera crew
to film him with the sign and for them to film him while
"protecting" the protesters.

Jimmy looks from one member of the mob to another as he

enters their throng. Jimmy reacts to the NOISE and the
SOUNDS like someone carrying a bomb.
A light seems to shine down on a GIRL, Jimmy can’t quite see
her face. He’s held up as the group mashes together blocking
his path. He watches until she drifts deeper into the crowd.
He searches for her. Jimmy notices several POLICE OFFICERS
at the edge of the protest. Jimmy appears spooked and walks
away.

MARK V.O.
My name is Mark, I’m one of the
Book Club organizers.
A speaker roars with feminist angst, spittle flying from her
mouth.
2 INT. DINER - EVENING 2
Street noises lead to the inside of a diner. The hustle and
bustle converging on a man pouring generous amounts of
coffee down his gullet. This is MARK.
MARK
He walked into our Book Club one
day and that’s where he met her.

He sips on his coffee.

MARK
He would ask all these questions
about the books. I don’t think he
was really even reading them. I’d
catch him, verbatim, telling her
something I’d just told him.
2.

3 EXT. COMMUNITY CENTER - NIGHT 3

Jimmy sits isolated from others at a bookclub.
MARK V.O.
He was weird, but you felt for him,
in a way. He didn’t really have a
grasp on what was going on around
him, he was trying to figure it
out, but he didn’t have any
friends.

4 EXT. CITY STREET - NIGHT 4

Jimmy walks alone down a city street looking downtrodden.
MARK V.O.
Their relationship started a few
months in. I think she might’ve
felt bad for him, but it was real,
at least for awhile.
5 INT. HOUSE - NIGHT 5

The camera looks through glass towards two people on a

couch, warm yellow light illuminating them in their little
home. Jimmy sits next to someone, their face not quite in
sight. He looks happy.

MARK V.O.
I knew something happened, she
filed a restraining order. I just
never thought it would get quite so
bad.

6 EXT. STREET - DAY 6

Jimmy keeps his head down as the police officers approach.
MARK V.O.
I’ve been following him, just to be
safe, to make sure he doesn’t do
anything stupid.
(beat)
He sent her chocolates. He sent her
cards and stuffed animals. He did
everything in his power to win her
back. She organizes protests. That
was his way in.
3.

7 INT. DINER - EVENING 7

Mark sits contemplatively while being interviewed in the

Hey Jimmy! Is that you?
Mark stops Jimmy in the streets.
MARK
It’s been awhile.
(beat)
What’ve you been up to?
Mark positions himself between Jimmy and Jimmy’s ex. Jimmy’s
eyes dart back and forth. He looks down the alleyway and
sees his ex grow smaller in the distance.

JIMMY
I’ve been, you know, this and that.
I’ve been around in the world.

Jimmy looks down and lying on the ground is a SMALL STUFFED

COW.
10 EXT. CARNIVAL - DAY 10
FLASHBACK: Jimmy hands someone a small stuffed cow. He
smiles.
11 EXT. STREET - DAY 11
MARK
Pretty vague.
(beat)
Do you have somewhere to be?
Mark looks at what Jimmy keeps glancing at.

(CONTINUED)

MARK
Is that Sarah?
Mark looks back and Jimmy is sprinting away.
12 EXT. STREET - DAY CONTINUOUS 12

Jimmy pulls a HAT over his head and begins to walk in

another direction. A cop car zooms by and he walks faster.
Jimmy looks right into the camera.

JIMMY
Did you tell him?
The camera shakes as if to say "no".
JIMMY
Why would he be there?
(beat)
Unless he’s dating Sarah.
Jimmy turns to glare at the cameraman.

13 EXT. NIGHT - STREETS 13

Jimmy meanders aimlessly through streets. Eventually he
makes it into the woods where he stops to listen to two
lovers lying among grassy meadows, he takes a few photos.
Then walks off back toward the city.

Jimmy walks through the city. He opens a back gate. The
camera looks up at the moon.
15 EXT. NIGHT - CITY STREET 15
The camera tilts down from the moon towards cookie crumbs
lining a moonlit street. They lead down an alleyway and to a
gate. It’s her gate, we’ve been here before. The camera,
like a ghost, moves thru the gate and down towards her door.
The camera passes Mark who stares ominously at the camera.
The door to Jimmy’s girlfriend’s house opens. His girlfriend
has her backed turn and wears a WHITE GOWN and SHAW that
blow in the wind.

17 INT. NIGHT - JIMMY’S ROOM 17

Jimmy shoots up from bed. He breathes heavy and looks up at
the ceiling. It’s not the same room he was in before.
Someone opens the door to the room. The MAN looks surprised
to see Jimmy.
MAN
Hey!
Jimmy gets up, grabs his backpack, opens the window, and
flees down a fire escape.
18 EXT. STREET - DAY CONTINUOUS 18
Jimmy runs out into an alley. Looks around and begins to
move out.

Jimmy looks at ease.

JIMMY
I decided to get this apartment.
(beat)
I got this job at a coffee shop. I
make coffee. It’s not what I had in
mind.

JIMMY
The group?
(beat)
I’ve let go of those grandiose
ideas. I’ve joined the working
stiffs of America. I’m no longer
the caped crusader trying to save
the world from danger.
(beat)
Maybe one day.
(beat)
A barista by day, a Watcher by
night.
24 INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY 24

winces in disgust.
