TRAINING PROPOSAL

I. Title Teachers’ Capability Building & Values Transformation Workshop: An

SLE Approach
II. Inclusive Date October 25-27, 2017

III. Venue TBA

IV. Participants Twenty-three (23) Teaching and Non-Teaching personnel of
Pagsulhugon National High School

V. Rationale According to National Competency Based Teacher Standards-

Teachers’ Strengths & Needs Assessment, there should be a
continuing design and conduct of training and development
program intended for the enhancement of the teaching-learning
practice. Provisions of quality Professional Development for Teacher
should be realized and sustained in order to improve teachers’
performance that undeniably affects school-wide learning
outcomes. Such thoughts make the school community of
Pagsulhugon National High School will aspire for appropriate and
relevant trainings for the growth and betterment of its teaching force.

In the discussions made by J. William Pfeiffer, it was known that in all

human interactions there are two major ingredients- content and
process. The first deals with the subject matter or the task which the
group is working. The second ingredient, the process, is focused on
what is happening between and to the group members while the
group is working. The concept of group process significantly deals
with such items as morals, feeling tone, atmosphere, influence,
participation, styles of influence, leadership struggles, conflict,
competition, cooperation and the rest.

In most interactions however, very little attention is given to the

process even if it is generally observed to be as the major cause of
ineffective group action. Sensitivity to group process will allow one to
identify and asses group issues or concerns early and arrive at
solutions effectively. Since group process is basic and common in all
groups, awareness of them will enhance a person or a members
worth to the group and enable him/her to be an effective group
member as well as facilitator.

In order to elevate the present interpersonal climate and move to a

climate of openness, diminish opposing forces and induce change,
Pagsulhugon National High School conducts Teachers’ Capability
Building & Values Transformation Workshop: An SLE Approach. It
primarily offers Effective Group Development strategies through
Team-Building activities to which core program flow are shown
below:
Furthermore, conflict is a daily reality in life. Whether at home or at
work, an individual’s needs and values constantly and invariably
come into opposition with those of other people. These conflicts may
start from relatively minor, easy to handle to greater magnitude. This
workshop recognizes conflict resolution as the most important social
skills that an individual can possess. Such skill along with effective
communication skills, authentic leadership and the rest are to be
obtained at the end of the workshop which will in return help
increase the participants’ productivity at work.

Belief-value system of teacher-participants will be another very

crucial matter during the workshop. As we know, belief and values
shape our preferences, direct our behaviours and therefore
determine the quality and uprightness that we possess as educators.
Using the SLE approach the participants will become more aware of
their behaviour by being part of the group. Such tools and exercise
will improve teachers’ personal effectiveness.
VI. Objectives At the end of the workshop, what must the Filipino Teacher Learn to
do? What change in the teacher-participants’ values and
personality-based leadership is needed by present circumstances?
The following general objectives are set as follow:

1. The teacher-participants must learn to work together more

effectively.

They need to the power or opportunity to identify with a group

larger than his family or relatives and take away the fight for his
own prestige without the awareness that where the common
good suffers he suffers too. It is truly vital to increase the level of
cooperation and collaboration of the teachers in order to offer
academic excellence to the student-learners. The participants will
be empowered to build effective group discussion, discover
leadership potentials, conflict resolution strategies and the like
which will pave way to work effectiveness and efficiency. It will as
well make the participants feel the belongingness and feel even
happier in their field of work through structured group dynamics
or team-building activities.

2. To work together, the teacher-participants must learn to trust each

other.
As an article says, one way to obtain social justice would be to
pass a law prohibiting people from building walls around their
houses. If we are to imagine that the rich people in the world had
no walls to protect them, they will most probably do their best to
make friends with the common people and thus allow MUTUAL
TRUST and RESPECT to take place of walls. During the training,
participants will basically immerse themselves in values
transformation.
3. To trust each other one must learn to trust him-self.

This is a common principle in personality dynamics wherein it is

believed that a man has to love and respect himself/herself before
he can love and respect the others and he must trust himself before
he can trust others. The participants at the end of session must
experience himself as worthwhile and they are to feel that he/she, in
company with fellow teachers, is responsible on whatever goes on
his/her school community. The teacher-participants must attain
PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS through SLE activities at the end of the
workshop.

In order to be specific in the goals of the workshop, the following

specific objectives were drawn from the general ones:

Group/Team development concerns:

Individual/Personal development:

To increase self-knowledge, that is knowledge of one's own

values, weaknesses, and feelings and obtain the ability to
transform them in order to improve work productivity
resulting to better student performance and learning
outcome.

To improve social effectiveness and become a team

player.

To acquire personal effectiveness and start a self-care

activity and strategy.

To sustain commitment and productivity in the

teaching profession.

To understand the importance of group discussion

and effective communication in good working
relationship with co-teachers.
To appreciate the importance of group cohesion and
participation in obtaining DepEd mission and vision
for the benefit of the session.
VII. Methodology Below is the process flow of the Experiential Learning Cycle or
Structured Learning Experience which will be applied the entire
workshop/activity:

Experiential learning is a phrase used interchangeably with inductive

method which underscores an oft-repeated saying that life is a
continuing process of learning. It embodies all the principles and
conditions of learning in adult education. It as well summarized in
Confucius’ emphatic articulation: “I hear and I forget, I see and I
remember, I do and I understand”. Each session in the workshop will
be guided by progressive set of steps: (1) setting the climate, (2)
determining the learning objectives, (3) doing; (4) looking, observing;
(5) thinking, analysing, generalizing and (6) acting.

Lastly, the workshop acknowledges the difference between training

and formation. As training is primarily focused on the development of
skills which enables one to be more effective in accomplishing task
while Formation is concerned with the development of one’s heart.
So, in this workshop we employ a combined concept of training and
formation which will allow the teacher-participants to be more real,
responsive or response-able.
