CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background

` Social media is a platform for public around the World to discuss their issues and
opinions. Before knowing the actual aspects of social media people must have to know
what does social media mean? Social media is a term used to describe the interaction
between groups or individuals in which they produce, share, and sometimes exchange
ideas, images, videos and many more over the internet and in virtual communities.
Children are growing up surrounded by mobile devices and interactive social networking
sites such as Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook, which has made the social media a vital
aspect of their life. Social network is transforming the behavior in which youthful people
relate with their parents, peers, as well as how they make use of technology.
The effects of social networking are twofold. On the positive side, social networks
can act as invaluable tools for professionals. They achieve this by assisting young
professionals to market their skills and seek business opportunities. Social networking
sites may also be used to network efficiently. On the negative side, the internet is laden
with a number of risks associated with online communities. Cyber bullying, which means
a type of harassment that is perpetrated using electronic technology, is one of the risks.
In this paper we cover every aspect of social media with its positive and negative effects.
Focus is on the particular field like health, business, education, society and youth. During
this paper we explain how these media will influence the society in a broad way.

2.1. Social Media Explanation

Social media is online media, with users able to easily share, share and create blog
content, social networks, wikis, forums and the virtual world. Blogs, social networks and
wikis are the most common forms of social media used by people throughout the world.
Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein designed social media as "a group of internet-based
applications built on the basis of ideology and Web 2.0 technology, and that enable user-
based content-based communication".
Social networking is a site where everyone can create a personal web page, then
connect with friends to share information and communicate. The biggest social network
between Facebook, Myspace and Twitter. If traditional media uses print and broadcast
media, social media uses the internet. Social media invites anyone who is interested in
participating and giving feedback, giving comments, and sharing information in a fast and
unlimited time.
When internet and cellphone technology is progressing, social media is also growing
rapidly. Now to access Facebook or Twitter for example, it can be done anywhere and
anytime just by using a cellphone. So fast people can access social media that turn to a big
phenomenon against the flow of information not only in developed countries, but also in
Indonesia. Because the speed of social media has also begun to appear to play a role in
conventional mass media in news planning.
The rapid development of social media now raises all people who can have the
media itself. If you want to have traditional media such as television, radio, or newspapers,
you need a lot of capital and a lot of labor, so you can provide other media. A social media
user can use social media with internet access, even those who access it faster, without
large fees, without expensive tools and do it themselves without a company. We as users
of social media can freely change, add, change writings, images, videos, graphics, and
various other content models.

2.2. The Role And Function Of Social Media
Social media is an effective business promotion tool because it can be accessed
by anyone, so that promotion networks can be broader. Social media is an indispensable
part of marketing for many companies and is one of the best ways to reach customers and
clients. Social media such as blogs, facebook, twitter, and youtube have a number of
benefits for the company and are faster than conventional media such as print media and
TV advertisements, brochures and leaflets.
Social media has advantages compared to conventional media, including:
1. Simplicity / ease.
In a conventional media production high-level skills and superior marketing skills are
needed. While social media is very easy to use, even for people without IT bases it
can access it, all you need is a computer and an internet connection.
2. Build Relationships.
Building Relationships Social media offers unparalleled opportunities to interact with
customers and build relationships. The company gets a direct feedback, ideas, tests
and manages customer service quickly.
3. Global reach.
Traditional media can reach globally but of course with very expensive and time-
consuming costs. Through social media, businesses can communicate information at a
glance, regardless of geographic location.
4. Measurable.
Measured With an easy tracking system, message delivery can be measured, so the
company can immediately find out the effectiveness of the promotion.

in using social media there are many positive and negative impacts in various
aspects including:

helps a man toward one side of the world to interface and trade thoughts with a man at
the other side.With the use of social media students can easily communicate or share
information quickly with each other through various social networking sites like
Facebook, and Instagram etc.

One can adopt its benefits to gain positive results in education. The access of web-based
social networking gives the chance to instructors to show great computerized citizenship
and the utilization of Internet for profitability.

B. Negative effect of Social Media on Education Reduced learning and research

Students are depending more on the information reachable easily on these social
networking sites and the web. This reduces their learning and research capabilities.

time they will go through associating face to face with others. This decreases their
relational abilities. They won't have the capacity to convey and mingle adequately face

paying for it.

You can impart your issues to the group to get help and energy. Regardless of whether it
is helping in term of cash or in term of advices, you can get it from the group you are

Television and print media nowadays are one-sided and does not pass on the genuine

also. It can likewise squander individual’s time that could have been used by profitable
tasks and exercises.
Fraud and Scams
Several cases are available where people have committed fraud and scams through the
online networking.

3.1. Conclusion
Social media is an online media, with its users can easily share, share and create
the contents of blogs, social networks, wikis, forums and the virtual world. Blogs, social
networks and wikis are the most common forms of social media used by people
throughout the world. Another opinion says that social media is an online media that
supports social interaction and social media using web-based technology that transforms
communication into an interactive dialogue.
Some negative impact that arises due to excessive use of social networking:
1. Make time wasted in vain
2. Add expenses
3. Interferes with the concentration of learning
4. Threatening self security
5. Threatening health
Some positive effects that we can get from using social media:
1. As a medium for disseminating information
2. As a means to develop skills and social

3.2. Suggestion
We need to learn to use the internet so that we do not become people who are addicted to
social networking. It is better if the users of this social networking site do not have to stop
completely to not enjoy the site, but it is better to use it to reduce it by reducing the hours
of playing Facebook, Twitter, etc.
