The Toro Tool Joint Iden fier is a simple yet effec ve way to determine most oil field rotary shouldered connec on
types. This can be an invaluable tool when the connec on iden fica on marking is worn or in ques on. The Toro
Tool Joint Iden fier also includes a bit nozzle iden fier for checking the bit nozzle orifice. Both measuring
instruments are combined into a compact and portable ruler format that can be made readily available should a
ques on arise in the field.

The following rotary shoulder connec ons can be determined by using the Toro Tool Joint Iden fier:
API Numbered Connec ons (NC) API Regular Connec ons (REG)
PAC Extra Hole (XH)
Full Hole (FH) Hughes (H-90)
Internal Flush (IF)
Pin Threads:
First, you will need to determine the thread count by inch using the thread cut outs at the end of the iden fier
(Figure 1)
Figure 1
Con nue to use the thread cut outs un l you have a match.
In Figure 1 the thread cutout iden fies the pin as 4 threads
per inch.
When iden fying a pin connec on, first determine whether it has a cylinder radius or a stress relief groove. (Figure 2)
Figure 2
If your pin connec on does not
have a relief groove, use outside
diameter calipers to measure the
cylinder radius next to the pin
shoulder. (Figure 2)

HOW TO USE THE TORO TOOL JOINT IDENTIFIER, PIN THREADS, CONTINUED
To measure a pin with a relief groove, you will need a couple of rubber bands or another set of hands. You will also
need another Tool Joint Iden fier or a straight edge.

NOTE: Because we determined that the pin is 4 threads per inch, the nearest measurement is NC 46 (this is why
we must insure we know how many threads per inch the connecƟon is)! In this example we know that the
threaded connecƟon is NC 46.
First determine the thread count per inch using the 3 cut outs at each end of the iden fier.
Con nue to use the thread cut outs un l you have a match.
In Figure 11 the thread cutout iden fies the pin as 4 threads
per inch.

Place the other side of the iden fier on the face of the box and measure the width to determine the connec on size.
In this example, because we determined that the connec on is 4 threads per inch, the Toro Tool Joint Iden fier has
designated the pin threads as NC 50. (Figure 13)
Figure 14
The Toro Tool Joint Iden fier is a simple yet effec ve way to determine nozzle size in drill bits nozzles. To determine
nozzle size, insert the small end of the Nozzle Iden fier into nozzle orifice. Check the measurement at the loca on
where the Nozzle Iden fier stops inside the orifice. This measurement will be the diameter of the orifice.
The front side of the Nozzle Iden fier shows increments in 1/32 of an
inch. The number on this side is typically used to iden fy the nozzle
type (i.e. #12 nozzle, #16 nozzle, etc.).

The back side of the Nozzle Iden fier shows the same measurement
markings as the front side but in 1/8 of an inch increments.
