1. CENTRALIZER TYPES OVERVIEW

BOW SPRING AND SEMI-POSITIVE CENTRALIZERS

Top-Co’s primary cementing tools and casing accessories are essential components of a successful casing or cement-
ing program. Casing accessories assist the operator in successfully placing and supporting the casing string in the
wellbore, enhancing mud removal and providing zone isolation.
Proper selection of primary cementing accessories reduces the need for a secondary cementing, ensuring tubulars
get to target depth, achieve optimum circulation and reducing risk of differential sticking.
Centralizers provide uniform annular clearance and reduce friction while running casing.
Top-Co API bow spring centralizers meet or exceed API Specification 10D, meeting starting, running and restoring
force criteria. These are available as either welded or non-welded centralizers with hinged or slip-on collars with
hinged centralizers offering easy installation around casing coupling or stop collars.

Slip-on centralizers, a stronger design, are utilized in close tolerance applications and cannot be run over couplings
or stop collars. They must be installed with set screws or between stop collars.
Bow Spring Centralizers feature the following benefits:
• Centralization of casing in the wellbore
• Prevention of differential sticking
• Smoother running capability due to reduction of frictional forces
• Allows for reciprocation or rotation of casing
• Provision of reinforcement to the cement column
• Bows can be configured to meet any hole diameter

The design of the non-weld centralizer offer unique features including the ability to ship unassembled yielding
shipping and storage cost reductions. The compatibility of the bows with various end band sizes reduces inventory
requirements and gives increased flexibility of casing and hole size combinations.

RIGID CENTRALIZERS AND STAND-OFF BANDS

Rigid or positive centralizers were developed for hole conditions that do not allow API centralizers to be run. Typical
applications would be tight restrictions in the well bore and deviated or horizontal wells.
Special applications include:
• Close tolerance requiring an outside diameter only slightly larger than hole size.
• Free rotation of the string requiring solid collar centralizers.
• Vastly greater side load conditions requiring rigid centralizers to meet stand-off requirements.
• Deviated and horizontal well applications where the bore hole is well consolidated and a good primary cement-
ing job is necessary.
• Slip-on centralizers are suitable for pipe reciprocation requirements.

Rigid Centralizers feature a welded or non-welded construction similar to bow spring centralizers with 2 collars at
both ends and rigid ribs running between them. Stand-Off bands are of solid welded or cast construction, and are
typically much shorter than rigid centralizers.
Rigid Centralizers aid in positively centering the casing in the wellbore during cementing operations. Applicable for
horizontal and highly deviated well designs, the rigid centralizers center casing in previous cemented casings and
liner overlaps and can assist in aligning casings through well heads near surface.
Stand-Off Bands can be used in well designs where casing reciprocation and / or rotation is required and was devel-
oped to be used in long string cementation highly deviated applications. These centralizers are typically more robust
than rigid centralizers due to the nature of their construction.
Heavy Duty Stand-Off Bands are designed for extreme loading conditions, or where the centralizer is expected to
see a lot of abuse.
Rigid Centralizers and Stand-Off bands are available with straight or spiral blade options. Spiral blade stand-off
bands have better stand-off capabilities as they are able to bridge key holes in the well bore, however they create
added friction during run in.
To determine left hand or right hand spiral look at the centralizer standing upright in running position. Looking at
the bottom of the blade or bow follow it to the top and if the top of the blade or bow shifts to the right then it is a
right hand spiral centralizer.

All Stand-Off bands are available with integral set screws, or they can be used with stop collars. Stand-Off bands can
also be installed to float on the casing and will allow the casing to be reciprocated or rotated without issue.

STOP COLLARS
Stop Collars are used as an integral accessory to keep centralizers and other casing attachments in place on the
casing string. The collar design should allow casing rotation with no or limited protrusions that can hang up on a
centralizer blade. A stop collar should always have a stronger holding force than the centralizer starting force and is
built to API recommended practice 10D2.

CABLE WALL CLEANERS

Many operators run cable wall cleaners to assist in removing excess filter cake and gelled mud from the wellbore,
providing a better bonding surface for the cement. The cable wall cleaners also add localized turbulence during
cementing process and can also act as steel reinforcement in the cement sheath.

CEMENT BASKETS
Cement baskets are designed to help support the cement column and reduce some of the annular pressure in the
well bore created by the cement column. They can also be used as an alternative to an external casing packer in
certain situations. Note: Cement baskets are not centralizers and will not centralizer the casing in the wellbore.

PROPER CENTRALIZER SELECTION

Successful casing and proper placement of casing centralizers are necessary in obtaining a quality primary cement
job. Proper selection is the key and Top-Co’s spacing program can be run to ensure efficient casing stand-off, torque
and drag. It calculates the minimum number of centralizers and determines optimum placement. The program can
be designed to advise minimum spacing or minimum stand-off.

2. GENERAL INSTALLATION

2.1 HINGED COLLAR

2.2 COLLARS WITH SET SCREWS

All centralizers are designed to be either slipped on to or hinged over the casing/coupling the casing.
Top-Co’s standard centralizers are designed to measure casing outside diameter plus 1.5%. This is larger than the API
tolerance on casing outside diameters by 0.5%.
Unless equipped with set screws, the centralizer should be able to be free to rotate after installation.

2.1 HINGED COLLARS

For Hinged centralizers, after the centralizer is installed on the casing, drive the hinge pins into the hinge until the
head of the hinge pin is flush with the centralizer end band.
Bend the protruding end of the hinge pin to ensure it is retained in the hinge. The centralizer should be able to be
freely rotated.
IMPORTANT: Make sure that pin end is bent so that it cannot be accidentally removed from hinge.

2.2 COLLARS WITH SETSCREWS

All centralizers with set screws on the collar must be installed with the
set screws on the bottom (towards the well bore). All Turbolizers have
set screws.

Types: 300 305 313 350 850 302 310 320 355 870 304 311 336 370

If at all possible, Centralizers with a bow spring design that have a starting & running force should be pulled into the
wellbore by the weight of previously run casing.
All bow spring centralizers must be installed either over casing couplings or Stop Collars.
The distance between the Centralizer end bands is great enough that the Centralizer can be installed over standard
API Buttress and 8rd casing couplings.

NOTE: If bow spring centralizers are installed between stop collars or allowed to free float on the casing, the bows
will expand when they encounter under-gauge or reduced hole sizes causing unusual running forces and may pre-
vent the casing from passing through the hole.

By installing a bow spring centralizer over a stop collar or casing coupling the lower centralizer collar will be fixed
during the running operation. With the lower collar fixed the centralizer bow springs will reduce in diameter when
an under-gauge hole is encountered and the centralizer will freely pass through the under-gauge section of the hole.

3.B TURBOLIZER CENTRALIZERS

Types: 320 321

Turbolizer centralizers feature blades to agitate the fluid as it flows by the centralizer. These types of centralizers are
installed similar to a Type 300 centralizer as outlined in Section 2. Note, that since these centralizers have set screws,
no stop collars are required.
Type 320 Turbolizers have a vane design that is intended to mount over casing. They can be mounted over coupling
as well, however the turbolizer blades need to be compressed to do so (may be more difficult to do)
Type 321 Turbolizers are designed primarily to mount over coupling.

Type 320 Type 321

3.C SEMI RIGID BOW SPRING CENTRALIZERS

Types: 335 337 385 885

Semi Rigid design and should only be installed over Top-Co stop collars.

The semi-rigid design can NOT be installed over casing couplings; the coupling will not allow the springs to fully
compress and it will not be possible to run casing into the well.
Top-Co recommends that all centralizers with Semi Rigid bow design be installed over type 415 or 416 stop collars.

Types: 336

The spring design of the 336 allows the centralizer to be laced over the casing coupling.

When the bow upset contacts the casing the force exerted by the centralizer to center the casing increases dramat-
ically and allows this style of centralizer to act similar to a positive or rigid bar centralizer.

3.D SOLID BODY AND RIGID CENTRALIZERS

Types: 317 331 342 318 340 346 330 341 380 880

Top-Co solid body and rigid centralizers can be allowed to float on the pipe which will allow the Stand-off Band to
travel to the leading edge on the coupling and act as a coupling guide. Centralizers can also be run between Type 415
& 416 liner Stop Collars to locate them in a desired location on the casing string.

Type 415 and 416 Type 331

liner stop collars hinged centralizer

Hinged style rigid centralizers (i.e. Type 331) can be laced over coupling or a stop collar, or be allowed to float free.
Centralizers with set screws do not require stop collars.

2. Take one End Band, one Repair Band and half of all the Centralizer Ribs. Place End of Rib in the Centralizer Collar
Rib Pocket nearest to hinge and insert Retainer Band through opening between Rib and End Band.

3. Place next Rib in End Band Pocket adjacent to Installed Rib and rotate Retaining Band through the next pocket. Re-
peat this procedure until all pockets in the End Band have been filled with Ribs. The Retaining Band should be inserted
to the point where it allows for the Hinge Pin to be inserted through the hinge without obstruction.
4. Place an End Band for the other end of the Centralizer over the upper ends of the Ribs.

5. Insert Retaining Band through the openings between the Ribs and End Bands to retain the Ribs as done previ-
ously on the lower collar.

6. Assemble second half of Centralizer by repeating steps B thru E. Upon completion of second half, insert matching
hinges together and drive Hinge Pin through hinge ensuring that the head of the pin seats against top of hinge. Now the
Centralizer may be placed over casing and closed with Hinge Pin placed and secured in two remaining hinges.
