Systems of Linear Equations Mrs. Hazlewood
Ms. Hatton
A system of linear equations, is also called a linear system, consists of
two or more linear equations that have the same variables. A solution of a
system of linear equations with two variables is an ordered pair that
satisfies all of the equations in the system.
Example 1: Solving Systems by Graphing
A consistent system is a system with at least one solution.
Consistent systems can be either independent or dependent.
An independent system has exactly one solution. The graph of
an independent system consists of two lines that intersect at
exactly one point.
Example:
y= x + 5
y= 1/2x + 2
The point of intersection is the solution to the system. The
order pair is true in both equations

A dependent system has infinitely many solutions. The graph
of a dependent system consists of two coincident lines, or the
same line. So the equations have the same slope and y
intercept.

A system that has no solution is an inconsistent system.
Therefore these two lines are parallel and they will never
intersect.
The slope is the same, but different yintercepts
