Determination of the Effects of Drugs on Isolated and Perfused Frog Heart

Recording
Observation Table
Conclusion
Effect of Given Drugs on Isolated Frog Heart
1) Adrenaline increases heart rate and increases the amplitude of contractions. This indicates the positive
inotropic and positive chronotropic effects of adrenaline

2) Acetylcholine decreases heart rate and decreases the amplitude of contractions. This indicates the
negative inotropic and negative chronotropic effects of Acetylcholine.

3) Potassium chloride decreases the heart rate and decreases the amplitude of contractions. This
indicates the negative inotropic and negative chronotropic effects of Potassium chloride.

4) Calcium chloride increases heart rate and increases the amplitude of contractions. This indicates the
positive inotropic and positive chronotropic effects of Calcium chloride.

Effects of Antagonists on the Actions of Agonists on Isolated and Perfused Frog
Heart

1) Propranolol inhibits the positive inotropic and positive chronotropic effects of Adrenaline.

2) Atropine inhibits the positive inotropic and positive chronotropic effects of Acetylcholine.

3) Propranolol and Atropine do not affect the actions of Calcium chloride and Potassium chloride on frog
heart.
Observation Table
Conclusion
Effect of Cardiotonics on Hypodynamic Frog Heart
Perfusion of isolated frog heart with modified Ringer solution (containing 1/4th of Calcium chloride)
reduces the amplitude of contraction of heart, whereas, administration of Digoxin solution increases the
amplitude of contraction and reduces heart rate.
