Problem Set 2 Due: 2/14/2015

1. Solve the following problems from Braja M. Das, Principles of Foundation Engineering, 7th Ed.
a. Settlement on footings on cohesionless soils: 5.16, 5.17
b. Elastic Settlement: 5.8, 5.9, 5.10
c. Consolidation settlement: 5.5, 5.6, 5.20, & 5.21
d. Settlement of mat foundations: 6.2, 6.8
2. The soil conditions at the site of a proposed building are shown in the attached Figure 1. The
building is 100 ft long by 50 ft wide. It is to be supported on isolated square spread footings 10 ft
in width, located as shown in the attached Figure 2, at a depth of 10 ft below the orginal ground
surface. The column loads are:

Interior Column 600 tons

Wall Coumn 350 tons
Corner Column 200 tons

Assume the unit weights of the sand and gravel above the water table is 120 lb/ft3; saturated
weight of the sand and gravel below the water table is 123 lb/ft3, and the saturated weight of
clay is 104 lb/ft3. Using elastic theory, calculate the variation in the vertical stress with depth in
the clay stratum along the vertical line through points A, B, and C. Using data from the table
below, and the calculated stress change, estimate the ultimate consolidation settlements at the
center, the side, and the corner of the building.
