The Graded Assignment brief was released on 26th October 2015, (WK2D1).

You’ll have to write ONE (1) 400 word news article for RP’s Open House. The
Open House is scheduled to take place between Jan 7 and 9, 2016. This Graded
Assignment file must be submitted by 0900 on Monday, 18 January, 2016
(WK10D1).

Assignment scenario

You have been tasked to write a news story that covers this year’s RP Open House
for the news section of the campus publication, The Republican Post.

Submission guidelines

1. Keep to 400 words


a) 400 word count includes lead and body
b) 400 word count excludes headline and caption

2. Your story must have at most three (3) independent quotes, (potential
students, their parents and one other relevant person, all of whom must have
attended the 2016 Open House)

3. Your story must focus on ONE school or centre

4. You must include the following:


a) ONE Original credited photo (Ensure that the longest side of the picture
does not exceed 800 pixels)
b) A caption

5. Layout must be done in Microsoft Word and fit within one A4 page (single-
side) with a single-column layout. Minimum font size (11 point for body copy).
Your layout must include the captioned photo. Page two of your file must be a
reference page. (See below)

6. Save your final version in this file with the name:

7. Email to help-cec@rp.edu.sg with the same subject header as the file name.
Keep the file size to under 8MB

Republic Polytechnic (RP) held its annual Open House over the course of three days from 7th
January to 9Th January where it attracted prospective Students to Experience the courses
available in RP by setting up booths with hands-on experience.
A School that attracted a huge crowds With their State of the art Equipment is, the School of
Sports, Health and Leisure .(SHL) This is the first year the equipment they use for lessons are
brought out for the prospective students to Try out.
SHL offers a total of six diplomas, they are sports science, sports and leisure management,
outdoor and adventure learning, health management and promotion, healthcare administration,
as well as sports coaching. Two of which attracted the majority of its Crowd is the diploma
in Sports coaching (DSC) and Diploma in Outdoor adventure Learning (DOAL). This is
because they had a rock climbing wall, miniature golf course and light gates for the
prospective students to try, and have a better understanding of how lessons are conducted in
DOAL and DSC.

Most of the DOAL classes are conducted Outdoors and it’s one of the course’s standout
Feature, Gregory Poon, 17, a student from Ping Yi Secondary School said: “I am interested in
this course as I am a person who loves these outdoor activities and I can vision myself being
an outdoor facilitator.” He also Added that he does not like to stay indoors or stay still for long
periods of time.
“RP is the only polytechnic that has outdoor adventure as a curriculum.” Said Mr Allan Tan,
Programme chair of DOAL. Even though most of the lessons are conducted outdoors there
are principles and values to be taken away from this course by using RP’ s renowned Problem
based learning (PBL) System.
Over the Years Singapore’s sports and wellness is blooming with more people taking part in
sports or Watching Sports, and the overwhelming response from the students towards SHL
booths only serves to confirm that.
The open house not only served as a confirmation of growth in Health and wellness it also
Peaked the interest of some of the Prospective students, Bryan Lee,18, an ‘O’ level graduate
Said:” I did not know that polytechnics offer such courses such Sports coaching , I am
seriously considering putting it as one of my JAE choices as I love sports and love sharing my
knowledge with others.”

When I approached the Diploma of outdoor Adventure learning (DOAL) the facilitator
was standing there watching on as students tried taking on the rock wall. Gregory poon
was queueing to attempt the Rock wall when I approached him. Bryan Lee was at the
diploma in sports coaching Booth when I approached him.
