Lattes : Before reading, work on syllable games. 1:30-1:50pm


• Read non-fiction article together
• Have discussion: What is the main idea of this article (what is it about)? What are the details in the article that support
your idea of what the main idea is (what details prove that that is the main idea)?
Macchiatos: 1:50-2:10pm
• Read non-fiction article together
• Have discussion: What is the main idea of this article (what is it about)?
• Have students work individually: Highlight 5 sentences that support your idea of what the main idea is (5 sentences that
show details of the main idea).
• Go over sentences together
Espressos: 2:10-2:30pm
• Read non-fiction article together
• Have discussion: What is the main idea of this article (what is it about)? What are the details in the article that support
your idea of what the main idea is (what details prove that that is the main idea)?
• Have students work individually: Write a summary of the article. Begin summary with "The main idea of the passage is
_________________________________________." Continue article with information that helps you understand that
idea; finish the summary. Include the information that helps explain the main idea.
• Go over summaries together
While students are in small group with the teacher, the rest of the students are completing their May Do Menu
(Espressos and Macchiatos groups) OR their list of assignments (Lattes group).
