We find a -6% net approval rating for President Donald Trump, a very low number for a President that is
coming up to the first year anniversary of his inauguration. There is a significant gap between the genders
in Presidential approvals, where 51.4% of men say they approve of Trump’s performance as President
so far, while only 39.3% of women say the same. Disapproval is higher among younger respondents,
while there is -6.9% net approval rating in respondents in swing states, and -1.4% in states that he carried
by more than 5% in 2016. These numbers are especially troubling for Trump as he will need a strong
performance in these states, especially in the swing states, to win re-election in 2020.
Regarding whom Americans believe regarding the state of the White House, nearly 37.7% say that
they believe President Trump more than they believe Michael Wolff and Steve Bannon (13.8% and 11.8%
respectively). The second most popular option, however, is neither of them with 22.1%. Once again, far
fewer women and younger respondents believe the President than men and older respondents. There are
no significant differences between respondents in different states.
45.8% of Americans believe that members of the Trump campaign team knew or assisted with Russian
interference in the 2016 election, compared to 38.7% who do not. More men believe that there was no
collusion with Russia, while nearly 15% more women believe that the Trump team knew or helped the
Russians interfere with the election. Belief in interference is highest among the 18-34 age cohort, while the
respondents aged 35 to 49 were the only age group where more respondents believed that the Trump
campaign did not know or help with alleged Russian interference.
Television news networks dominate in terms of whom Americans trust more regarding a selected number
of news sources. Nearly a third of respondents trust Fox News, while 19% say they trust CNN more. Fox
News is the most preferred new source among all demographics except 18-34s, who said they trust CNN
the most. 9.3% of Americans say that do not trust any of these sources, beating newspapers such as the
New York Times and the Washington Post. 2.2% of Americans say that they trust Trump’s Twitter account
as their most trusted news source, beating out the alt-right news site Breitbart.
Americans are optimistic about the economy, their personal finances, and the finances of their neighbors,
although in all cases, there is significantly more optimism in all of these fronts among men than women.
