You are on page 1of 32

today we'll be showing you how to repair your appliance remember anytime you

work on an appliance make sure it's unplugged or the circuit breakers are off so
there's no chance of electrocution also make sure you turn off your hot and cold
water supply in this video we're going to show you how to change out the LG washer
bearings and seal it's gonna be a very easy repair and it's only take a few minutes to
show you how to do it if you already have these great if not you can click on the link
below or get it at appliance parts pros comm when you open up the packages you're
gonna get the new bearings and the new seal these are all sold individually so you
have to buy them all individually they're all changed usually at the same time so we
made one video to cover it all the bearings in seal are located in the back of the
outer tub the main reason to be changing them out is if the bearings have gone bad
and you're
00:57
getting grinding noise or the seal is
00:59
bad and you're getting water leaking out
01:01
of the back of the tub now we can take
01:03
the top off we're gonna remove the lower
01:04
screws that hold the bracket to the body
01:07
once we get those screws out we can pull
01:09
the top off now we can pull the top back
01:22
you want to pull it back just about an
01:24
inch and a half so you can clear the
01:25
stoppers if you go back too far you
01:29
won't be able to lift it up because
01:31
it'll hit the stoppers on the other side
01:32
so you just want to go about an inch and
01:34
a half back next we can pull out the
01:40
detergent drawer and press down on the
01:42
center in the back to release it so we
01:45
can pull it all the way out now we can
01:47
remove the two Phillips screws
02:02
next we have to disconnect these wire
02:04
harnesses right here so we're gonna
02:05
untwist these little holders and get the
02:09
wires out then we can pull the wires out
02:17
and disconnect them all you have to do
02:20
is find the release tab and press on it
02:22
pull it apart now we can unsnap the
02:34
front control panel there's some locking
02:35
tabs that go along the whole length of
02:37
it so we're gonna get those started and
02:39
pull the panel off once you get them all
02:44
up you can lift the panel up a little
02:46
bit lean it forward and feed these wires
02:50
that we just disconnected through the
02:53
hole and then you can pull the panel off
02:56
now we can open up the door and remove
02:59
the clamp that holds the gasket on
03:01
there's a spring located at the bottom
03:03
that we can pry off so we want to take a
03:05
small flat-head screwdriver and
03:07
carefully get behind it so we don't
03:08
damage the gasket once you get behind it
03:11
you can lift it out of the groove and go
03:15
all the way around the door to release
03:16
the gasket
03:25
now the way of the clamp off we can take
03:27
the gasket and kind of get it off of the
03:30
front panel so it's out of the way and
03:33
then we can reach in behind the door
03:36
switch and disconnect the wire harness
03:38
from the door switch press the release
03:40
tab and pull it off the switch now that
03:44
we have that disconnected we can close
03:46
the washer door and then we can take a
03:50
small flat-head screwdriver and open up
03:52
this small access panel right here it's
03:55
gonna come right off there's nothing
03:56
holding it on now that we have the cover
03:58
off we have access to inside there's
04:00
actually a little drain hose right here
04:01
if you're gonna be working on the pump
04:04
or any of the hoses on the inside you
04:06
want to take this plug out and make sure
04:09
you have a dish on the floor and drain
04:11
it into the dish you're not going to get
04:13
all the water out but it's gonna make it
04:15
a lot less messy once you get it
04:17
completely drained or as much water out
04:19
as you can you can put the cap back in
04:21
and then we can use our Phillips
04:23
screwdriver to remove the screw that
04:26
holds in the trim on this panel once you
04:29
have the screw up we can pull this
04:31
little panel out and just feed the drain
04:33
plug through it now that we have the
04:36
trim out of the way we can remove the
04:37
Phillips screw that holds the front
04:39
panel on now we can remove the four
04:47
screws that go across the top and hold
04:49
the panel on we're going to use our
04:51
Phillips screwdriver to take them
05:04
when you're taking the last screw out
05:06
you want to make sure that you hold the
05:07
panel on to the washer there's nothing
05:09
else really holding it on and it may
05:11
fall off now they have all the screws
05:20
off we can lift the front panel off the
05:22
washer there are a few different
05:28
variations of this gasket ours only has
05:30
one hose on it at the top there are some
05:32
that also have a hose at the bottom so
05:34
you want to make sure you remove that
05:35
too we have to disconnect this hose at
05:37
the top it's attached to a little white
05:39
fitting in there so we can take a
05:41
screwdriver and get it started once you
05:43
got it loose all you have to do this
05:45
pull it off to get the gasket off the
05:50
tub we have the same type of ring clamp
05:53
that we had on the other one we can use
05:55
our flat-head screwdriver and get behind
05:58
the spring and pull the retaining ring
06:01
off once you have it started up you can
06:10
just pull the whole gasket off now that
06:16
we have the gasket off we can remove
06:17
these upper and lower tub weights
06:19
they're gonna come off with a ten
06:21
millimeter socket we're gonna take them
06:22
off to make it easier to get the tub in
06:24
and out
06:35
now that we have the screws out we can
06:37
remove the upper weight and set it aside
06:43
now that we have the upper one up we can
06:46
take the lower one off and once you have
07:03
them out you can take it off and set it
07:04
aside on the top of the tub we have to
07:09
remove a few hoses we're gonna use our
07:11
Philips screwdriver and loosen these up
07:14
so we can take them off if you have to
07:16
hold the wingnut make sure you do all
07:20
right now that you have it loosened up
07:21
we can pull it off the tub second one we
07:24
have to disconnect is just press down
07:25
there's no clamp on it so just pull up
07:27
on it and take it off the third one is
07:30
this hose which the clamp is on the
07:32
other side so we'll have to spin around
07:36
and reach down in there and loosen it up
07:38
you're not gonna be able to see us do it
07:40
though again if you have to reach down
07:42
with your other hand and hold the
07:44
wingnut once you have it loosened up you
07:48
can go ahead and lift it off the tub
07:53
also at the bottom of the tub we have to
07:56
disconnect the thermistor plug all you
07:57
have to do is release the tab and pull
07:59
it off then we can take our wire cutters
08:02
and cut this zip tie off that holds the
08:06
wire harnesses in and then we can remove
08:11
the wires on the heater and the
08:14
grounding strap
08:18
the gronic strap is held in with a 10
08:20
millimeter nut we're gonna use our
08:23
socket and take it off we have to remove
08:31
this access panel tell them buy four
08:33
Phillips screws sure we're going to take
08:35
out to take the panel off now that you
08:47
have those screws out we can take the
08:49
panel off on the back of machine we have
08:52
to remove everything that's attached to
08:54
the tub so we're gonna reach in with our
08:56
phillips screwdriver and remove the
08:57
clamp from the hose where it holds it
09:02
onto the tub now that we have a clamp
09:08
loose we can reach in and pull it off
09:10
the tub now we can remove the screws
09:17
that hold the pressure chamber on
09:34
now we're gonna remove these three
09:36
Phillips screws so we can get the wires
09:38
loose because we can take off the rotor
09:40
assembly
09:54
next we can remove the 17 millimeter
09:56
bolt that holds this assembly on if you
10:00
can't get it to turn remember to hold
10:02
this and if you still can't get it to
10:04
turn you can have somebody hold the
10:05
inside of the drum once you have the
10:15
bolt out we can pull the assembly off
10:22
now we can use our 10 millimeter socket
10:24
and go around or remove all the bolts
10:27
that hold the stator assembly in
10:39
as you're taking this last one off
10:41
probably want to make sure you hold this
10:43
in place so those are the fall-off that
10:44
you're loosing it up now they have all
10:51
the bolts out we can take the assembly
10:53
and rotate it down and just connect
10:56
these two wire harnesses from switches
10:58
this one you need to squeeze and then
11:01
disconnect on this side you just have to
11:05
press on the release and then disconnect
11:07
it now we can remove the locking pins
11:10
that hold in the shock absorbers there's
11:12
two shocks on the front and one in the
11:13
back they all pretty much pull out the
11:16
same way we're gonna take a 13
11:17
millimeter socket on the front ones and
11:21
push it over the pin so it releases the
11:23
locking tab and then we can pull it
11:26
through the front with the pliers now
11:29
that we have the pin out of the way we
11:31
can get the shock absorber out from the
11:34
tub and swing it down out of the way
11:37
we're gonna take the one out on the
11:38
other side the exact same way
11:52
once you have the pinout you can get the
11:55
shock absorber out and rotate it out of
11:57
the way to take out the rear locking pin
12:02
we found that the socket won't fit
12:06
between the tub and the pin we found a a
12:08
12 millimeter wrench works pretty good
12:11
to depress the locking tab so just work
12:14
it on and then you can pull the other
12:17
side off with your pliers same as the
12:34
front shock absorbers you want to get it
12:36
off the tub and lay it out of the way
12:39
now the way of everything disconnected
12:42
from the tub we can take the springs off
12:43
there's one on each side there's a
12:46
little cover we have to take off if you
12:48
have to pop it off with a screwdriver
12:49
you can use a small flat-head and then
12:54
you can lift up on the spring to get it
12:57
out of the holder here and you can lower
13:00
it down and take the spring out of the
13:03
tub and hook it back in here so it's
13:07
there when we put the tub back in the
13:09
one on the other side is done exactly
13:10
the same way take the spring off the
13:22
same way on this side of the tub though
13:24
once you get it off you can hook it back
13:26
on to the retainer now that we have
13:29
everything off the tub we can lift it
13:31
out and set it on the floor it is a
13:34
little bit heavy so if you have anybody
13:36
that can help you and make sure they do
13:46
now that we have the tub out of the
13:48
washer we put it up on some wood blocks
13:50
to support it so we can go around and
13:53
remove all the bolts with our ten
13:54
millimeter socket
14:22
[Music]
14:28
now that you have all the bolts out from
14:31
around the tub you can separate the two
14:33
sides should come apart fairly easily
14:36
but if you have to you can stick a
14:37
screwdriver in there and pry it open the
14:40
seal has a video of its own but anytime
14:41
you split the tub it's a good idea to
14:43
change it so you don't have a leak when
14:45
you put it back together when you get
14:47
the front half of the outer tub off you
14:49
want to make sure that none of these
14:50
scratch marks where the tub has been
14:51
hitting have actually made a hole in the
14:53
front half of the tub if it's warm
14:56
pretty bad or pretty thin you want to go
14:58
ahead and change out the tub front too
14:59
now that we have the upper half of the
15:01
tub off you can lift the inner tub out
15:03
if it doesn't lift out then it could be
15:06
that the bearing is stuck in there so we
15:09
have to flip the top over and pound it
15:11
out you want to put your blocks of wood
15:19
on the plastic part of the tub so you
15:22
can bang the inner tub out before you
15:25
try to bang this out you can put some
15:27
rust Buster through it or if you have
15:29
some any type of penetrating oil you can
15:32
put it on there and let it sit for a
15:35
minute now that you have the penetrating
15:37
oil in there you want to take a piece of
15:38
wood and put it over the end of the
15:40
shaft to protect it and then you can hit
15:43
it with a hammer and pound it out now
15:50
that you have it out we can lift the
15:51
outer tub away now that we have the
15:57
inner basket out we can see that the
15:58
shaft is all rusted up and the main
16:01
problem is that the spider arms are
16:03
cracked and the aluminum is falling
16:04
apart so when you get to your tub out if
16:08
you see that it's like this you're gonna
16:10
have to change out the spider assembly
16:11
if it's just dirty you can clean up the
16:14
shaft with a wire brush and get it ready
16:16
to put it back in now that we know the
16:18
spider is messed up we can set the inner
16:21
tub aside and put the outer tub onto the
16:24
blocks now that we have the tub back on
16:26
the blocks we can take a flathead
16:27
screwdriver and just pry the old seal
16:30
out you don't have to worry about trying
16:32
to save it or anything we want to clean
16:34
all this gunk out on each side of the
16:36
bearings and we're gonna take in put
16:39
some of our penetrating oil
16:42
the Russ Buster we're gonna rudder
16:44
around the edge of the bearing to see if
16:48
it can soak in so when we try to drive
16:50
these out or make it easier to get out
16:52
and I'm gonna do the backside bearing
16:54
too it is important to clean out the
17:04
excess oil once the bearings are removed
17:05
because it can cause the tub material to
17:07
weaken now that we have everything
17:10
soaking in the penetrating oil we're
17:12
gonna take our punch and go through the
17:15
first one down into the second one and
17:18
we're gonna knock the lower one out
17:19
first now that we knock the burning out
17:27
the bottom side we can flip it over and
17:29
look at it now that we have this bearing
17:30
out we can pound the other one through
17:32
the other way now that we have both
17:38
bearings out you can use a nylon or
17:40
brass brush to clean out the bearing
17:42
area don't use a steel brush because it
17:44
may damage the tub material
17:46
here's the old bearings in steel next to
17:48
the new ones if you already have one of
17:50
these great if not you can get it out of
17:52
Planets parts pros.com before we put the
17:58
bearings into the cub we want to take a
18:00
little bit of liquid soap and put just a
18:02
very thin coating all the way around
18:05
both of them to make it easier to put
18:07
them into their spots all right to put
18:12
the new bearing in we're gonna set it
18:14
into place and tap it with a hammer if
18:17
you have a rubber mallet or a brass
18:18
hammer you can use that in this video
18:21
we're gonna use a metal hammer be extra
18:23
careful when using a metal hammer and
18:24
only tap the outer edges of the bearing
18:26
lightly so you don't damage the bearing
18:28
or toe
18:29
you want to make sure you pound it down
18:31
so it's flush with this metal surface
18:33
now that we have this down we can flip
18:36
it over and put the inside one in all
18:41
right same as the other one we're gonna
18:43
set it down nice and flat and get it
18:47
started with the hammer
18:50
so once you get it all the way down
18:51
we're going to have to use a punch to
18:53
install it if you have a brass punch you
18:56
can use that or even a piece of wood in
18:58
this video we're gonna use a metal punch
19:00
remember make sure you only tap the
19:02
outer edges lightly so that you don't
19:04
damage the bearing or toe once you have
19:09
the bearing down and flush we can put
19:13
the seal back in in order to make it
19:15
easier to push the seal back in you
19:16
don't want to put any grease or anything
19:18
on it but we can run just a thin thin
19:21
coating laundry soap around it don't put
19:27
a lot on there just a little bit once
19:29
you have it all the way around we can
19:32
take and push the seal in once you have
19:39
the seal pushed in so it's flush all the
19:41
way around we can put the washer back
19:42
together now we can set the inner tub
19:44
into the back half of the outer tub
19:46
we want to set it down slowly so the
19:49
shaft doesn't damage this seal as we
19:51
lower it down
19:53
alright you want to look down inside the
19:56
tub make sure you're getting it right in
19:58
the center of the hole and then slowly
20:01
lower it down you'll probably feel it
20:04
stop
20:05
and then settle down that last inch or
20:08
so until it's down around the water seal
20:10
alright now that we have the inner tub
20:12
back in we can put the front half of the
20:14
outer tub back on when you lower the
20:15
front half of the tub onto the back half
20:17
of the tub you want to make sure that
20:18
the heating element is guided down into
20:21
its bracket so it's properly positioned
20:36
now we're gonna go around and put all
20:38
the bolts back in and then we'll go
20:42
around and snug them down and then go
20:44
around again and tighten them up all
20:52
right to tighten them down we're going
20:54
to use our ten millimeter socket with
20:56
the long extension
21:21
all right now we can go around and snug
21:24
them all down now that we have the tub
21:38
put back together we took it off the
21:40
blocks and we're gonna lift it back
21:41
inside the washer it's kind of heavy so
21:43
if you need somebody to help you I make
21:44
sure you grab them we're gonna very
21:46
carefully set it in there so we can get
21:48
it up on the springs and then put the
21:50
shocks in same as when we took the
21:57
washer out we're gonna lift the spring
21:59
out and hook it through the tub
22:00
and then lift it back up and put it into
22:04
the frame now that you have the spring
22:16
in we can put the retainer back in we
22:18
can do the same thing on the other side
22:20
we're gonna take the spring off the top
22:22
and hook it through the tub and get
22:26
somebody to help you if you need to
22:27
remember it's pretty heavy all right now
22:31
that we have in the tub we can lift up
22:33
and put it into the frame once you have
22:40
it into the frame you can put the little
22:41
locking tab back in all right now we can
22:46
put in the shock absorbers we'll put the
22:48
one in the back in first all you have to
22:50
do is pull it back and stretch the shock
22:54
absorber up to line up the hole so we
22:55
can put the pin in and slide the pin
22:57
through you want to make sure you push
23:04
it far enough so the locking tab comes
23:06
through on the back side now we're up on
23:08
the front right side of the washer we're
23:10
gonna move the tub around and pull the
23:13
shock absorber up so we can line up the
23:16
holes and get the pin in same as the one
23:18
in the back you want to make sure that
23:20
the pin goes all the way through and the
23:22
locking tab is on the other side
23:27
now we can do the one on the left side
23:28
the same way except to move the tub
23:31
around and pull it push the shock up
23:34
into place once you have it lined up you
23:37
can put the pin through making sure it
23:40
goes all the way they look back and the
23:43
locking tab comes out on the top we're
23:46
gonna reconnect three hoses on these
23:48
bigger rubber hoses we're just gonna
23:50
slide them down and use our Phillips
23:52
screwdriver to tighten up the clamp the
24:01
smaller hose that we're gonna connect is
24:02
just two air hose so all we have to do
24:05
is push that down into place in the
24:10
third hose is the same as the first
24:12
we're just gonna push it down and
24:13
tighten up the clamp we can reach in
24:15
with our Phillips screwdriver and
24:17
tighten it down if the wing nut starts
24:21
to spin you can reach in with your other
24:23
hand and hold it down right on the
24:28
bottom of the tub in the front we're
24:30
gonna hook up the wire harnesses for the
24:32
heater and the thermistor the red one
24:34
was on the left one the yellow one was
24:37
on the right one
24:39
grounding wire goes there and then we'll
24:42
put our note on and tighten it down once
24:47
you have it on there we're gonna use our
24:48
10 millimeter socket to tighten it down
24:51
to hook up the thermistor we're just
24:53
going to reconnect the wire harness make
24:56
sure it locks in and then we're gonna
25:01
use a zip tie to reconnect the wire
25:04
harness to the tub
25:19
once you have it tightened down we can
25:21
cut it off with the wire cutters now
25:25
we're on the back of the machine we're
25:26
gonna hook up the tub to pump hose to
25:28
the tub all you have to do is line it up
25:30
and push it up onto the tub fitting now
25:32
we can reach in with our Phillips
25:34
screwdriver and tighten down the screw
25:35
if the wing nut is turning you have to
25:37
reach in with your other hand and hold
25:38
it now that we have the clamp on we can
25:43
put back in the screws that hold the
25:45
pressure chamber in place now we can
25:53
work the stator back up we're gonna just
25:57
plug in the wire harnesses and make sure
25:59
they snap into place once we have them
26:08
in place we can rotate this up we're
26:11
gonna put in this one bolt to hold it in
26:12
place while we connect the ground wire
26:15
and stuff below alright first we're
26:17
gonna put in their little plate that
26:18
holds the wiring harness against the
26:21
metal backing then we can reconnect our
26:26
grounding wire and then we connect
26:30
reconnect this little wire harness
26:33
holder to the bottom of the tub now that
26:38
we have all that connected we can put it
26:41
in all the bolts to hold this in and
26:43
tighten them down now we can take our
26:50
town' millimeter socket and go around
26:51
and tighten them all down
27:10
now that we have the rotor back on we
27:13
can put some blue thread sealer onto the
27:17
bolt
27:17
before we put it back in and then we can
27:26
use our 17 millimeter socket to tighten
27:27
it down
27:28
remember if it starts to spin you're
27:31
gonna have somebody hold the inside of
27:32
the tub so you can tighten it down
27:34
tighter now we can put the back panel on
27:39
all you have to do is line the tabs up
27:42
in the bottom and then kind of flex a
27:45
little bit to get the tabs to go on the
27:47
top and then we can put the four screws
27:50
back in with our Phillips screwdriver
28:02
now we can put the lower and the upper
28:04
weights back on we're gonna do the lower
28:06
one first set it in place push it in and
28:12
then we can put the screws in and
28:14
tighten them down with our ten
28:16
millimeter socket the upper one goes on
28:30
the same way we're gonna step on the
28:32
front of the tub until we can line it up
28:35
put it on alright once you have the
28:38
weight on there make sure it's Cu it all
28:40
the way and we can put our screws in and
28:45
tighten them down with our ten
28:46
millimeter socket alright now we can put
29:05
the front gasket back on I want to make
29:07
sure that this little pointer here is
29:09
right at 12 o'clock and we can work it
29:11
around the tub it's kind of tough to get
29:17
the field putting the gasket in with
29:19
gloves on so we took them off so we
29:20
could put the gasket in and show you how
29:22
to do it and make sure that this is in
29:24
the groove so we can put the ring clamp
29:26
on alright now that we have it all the
29:29
way around the group we can put the
29:30
clamp on and get it all the way around
29:34
and you want to line it up and you want
29:37
to get it back over here to the three
29:38
o'clock position
29:39
and then we're gonna grab our vise grips
29:41
and lock it onto the spring so we can
29:42
stretch it up over and put the clamp on
29:52
now that we have the rear clamp on we
29:54
can hook up the hoses however many you
29:57
happen to have on your machine make sure
29:59
they're on nice and tight now we go
30:01
ahead and put the front back on we want
30:03
to take and set it onto the three tabs
30:11
and make sure that your hose doesn't get
30:14
pinched in there and then we can tilt it
30:16
up and put in the four screws
30:27
next we can put back in this cover
30:29
assembly first we can put back in the
30:33
little screw that holds the front panel
30:35
to it next we can put the trim assembly
30:41
back in want to pull out the drain hose
30:42
and put it through the hole snap it into
30:47
place and then we can put the screw back
30:50
in you can take it a little drain hose
30:59
and put it in the clip and then we can
31:04
put the front access panel on and snap
31:08
it closed now we can reach in behind the
31:11
door gasket and grab the wire harness
31:14
and hook it back up to the switch pull
31:23
the gasket out so we can attach it to
31:26
the front panel we have to go around and
31:31
make sure that the gasket is in this
31:32
groove so when we put the spring clamp
31:34
on it holds it in place
31:51
all right now we can grab the spring
31:53
clamp and we want to make sure the
31:58
spring is down at six o'clock
32:09
once we have it stretched around most of
32:11
the way we can put the vice grips on and
32:15
very carefully stretch out the spring
32:17
and get the clamp the rest of the way
32:19
around you want to make sure when you
32:22
pull back on this that you pull straight
32:23
back so you're not pulling out and
32:26
pulling the gasket off now that we have
32:34
it on we can close the door put the
32:38
console back in we're gonna feed the
32:39
wires through the hole in the back panel
32:43
and pull them through and then we can
32:45
rotate the panel up into place and snap
32:47
it in now though we have the wires
32:54
pulled through we can connect them back
32:56
to the main wire harness all you have to
32:58
do is snap them together and make sure
32:59
they lock and then we can reconnect them
33:10
to the wire harness holders now that we
33:18
have the console on it connected we can
33:20
put in the screws that hold the soap
33:22
dispenser
33:31
then we can put the detergent tray back
33:34
in all you have to do is line it up and
33:37
then push the release lever in so you
33:39
can slide it all the way in now we can
33:42
put the top on you want to set it down a
33:43
little bit back from the front you want
33:45
to make sure that these stoppers go into
33:47
these little cutouts so they can snap
33:49
into their little grooves and we can set
33:51
the top down and push it forward to lock
33:53
it into place now we can put the screws
33:56
back in then hold the top in place now
34:03
that you're done repairing the appliance
34:05
