1. UP DILIMAN OBLATION STATUE

WHO DID IT?


Sculpted by National Artist
Guillermo Estrella Tolentino

BACKGROUND
The oblation contains meanings
from top to bottom. From the
statue’s height of 3.5 meters,
symbolizing the 350 years of
Spanish rule to the rocks that
represent the islands of the
Philippines. This is Guillermo
Tolentino’s depiction of the 2nd
stanza of Jose Rizal’s “Mi Ultimo
Adios” which represents the
heroes that fought in World War
2. The oblation also shows the
patriotism and strong
nationalistic values of the
Filipinos towards their own
nation. The oblation became
UP’s main sculpture/model and
its replicas can also be seen in
different UP campuses.

Constructed by the Memorare
– Manila 1945 Foundation Inc.,
a private, non-profit
organization founded by the
civilian survivors of the Battle of
Manila and their descendants.
The Inscription of the Base is
composed by Nick Joaquin,
National Artist for Literature

BACKGROUND
The Memorare is a
commemoration of
the innocent victims
of World War 2. It
shows a hooded
woman cradling a
lifeless body of a
child and 6 other
figures in despair
surrounding them.
The whole sculpture
is a depiction of the
despair and cruelty of
the Japanese
Occupation in the
Philippines. The
monument was
unveiled on February
18, 1995

WHO IS IT?
King Charles IV of Spain

BACKGROUND
The monument is erected in
1824 as a sign of gratitude
towards King Charles IV of
Spain for the introduction of
smallpox vaccine in the
Philippines. The same year
the bronze statue is placed
on a marble pedestal facing
the Manila Cathedral. The
fountain at the base was
built in 1886.
