Basic Research: Presented by Manu Alias

Basic research is research aimed at increasing scientific knowledge without seeking to solve practical problems or create commercial applications. It is theoretical and seeks to understand fundamental principles through investigation of topics like the origins of the universe, composition of subatomic particles, or genetics of organisms. Basic research builds new knowledge, lays the foundation for science, and generates new ideas and theories but has no immediate practical use. It involves systematically defining a research problem, reviewing literature, formulating hypotheses, collecting and analyzing data, and reporting findings.

What do you mean my Research?

Research is searching for and gathering information, usually to

answer a particular question or problem. It is considered to be
more objective, methodical, well-determined scientific process of
investigation. Research involves a more systematic structure of
investigation and finally at the end it results into a systematic
report form.
Basic Research
 Basic research is also known as pure research and
fundamental research.

 The term basic research refers to study and research

that is meant to increase our scientific knowledge
base. This type of research is often purely theoretical
with the intent of increasing our understanding of
certain phenomena or behavior but does not seek to
 For example;
basic science investigations probe for answers to
questions
such as:

 How did the universe begin?

 What are protons, neutrons, and electrons composed of?

 How do slime molds reproduce?

 What is the specific genetic code of the fruit fly?

Features of Basic Research

 Increases understanding of fundamental principles

 Builds new knowledge
 Often purely theoretical in nature
 Usually a source of new scientific ideas or new perspectives
about the world
 Lays down the foundation of science
 Mainly academic in nature or carried out by universities
 Supports theories that explain how the world operates
Features Continues…

 Increases man’s scientific knowledge base or understanding

of phenomenon
 Does not seek to solve problems
 Outcome does not have potential, direct economic value
 Generates new ideas, principles and theories or simply
expand man’s knowledge
 No immediate practical use
 Expands knowledge about things
 It is not intended to create or invent something
Basic research steps

 Define research problem

 Review of literature
 Formulate hypotheses
 Preparing the research design
 Data collection
 Data analysis
 Interpretation and report
