Sculpture- Light capturing cut paper designs

Objectives:

Students will create an altering and repetitive design using at least 2 original
designs. Students will use exacto knives, rulers, tools, and precision in this project.
Once completed, the cut paper design will be exposed to a direct light source.
Students will learn the definition of a relief and how it applies to a sculpture.

Define relief:

Type of sculpture in which forms project from a flat background.

Procedure:

1. Introduce use of knife and cutting techniques.


2. Practice utilizing techniques on scrap paper.
3. Discuss guidelines with students:
a. Explain solid lines are cuts and dashed lines are scored
b. Use only geometric shapes, templates, and rulers
c. Sketch 6 motifs 2” by 2” and practice cutting. No cutting complete
shapes out.
d. Choose two of the best designs to make a repeated pattern that is
visually interesting and utilizes light and shadow
e. 2” by 2” boxes on 6” by 6” paper lightly. Must accurately measure
f. Use tracing paper to transfer motif/ design in a repeated pattern
Evaluation:

Neatness, accuracy, craftsmanship, clean cuts, no pencil showing
