Letter Writing Project

Objective: You will write a one-page letter that reflects an opinion, registers a complaint, or
requests information in a business or friendly context.

Instructions: Imagine you are one of the following characters from The Diary of Anne Frank:

Writer a well-structured letter to a friend describing your life in hiding. In your letter, you might
discuss living conditions, how you spend your days, how your relationships with people have
changed, how you have observed relationships among the others changing, things you miss, or
anything else you might think is of importance. Your letter must include: a heading, salutation,
body, closing, and signature.

Parts of a Letter: (from Texas Write Source)

1. Heading-Includes date and address if you do not know the recipient well. Write it in the
upper right-hand margin.
2. Salutation-This is the greeting. It is informal and can start with Dear _______, Hi
_______, or Hello _______. Always use a comma after the person’s name.
3. Body-This is the main part of the letter. The tone should be friendly, even if making a
complaint or giving a strong opinion about something. Make sure your ideas are well
organized. Each paragraph should have one controlling idea. The last sentence of the
body can have a friendly request or comment.
4. Closing-This section should be informal. Some examples include: Your friend _______,
Miss you, Best wishes, See you soon. The closing is aligned with the heading and
should be followed by a comma and your signature.
