FIELD REPORT – GIS EPIP

Substations are vital components of transmission

and distribution system. The equipments they have are
switch gear, control and relay panel, transformer, CT,
PT. In general, higher the voltage level, the more will be
the power handing capacity and proportionately the
more space [Air insulated station].

The GIS station can built up with much smaller

space. The GIS technology can shrink the space up to
70% with more reliable operation.

A typical GIS station is about one tenth of the size

of AIS and this feature is attractive in place like
Bangalore where land and location are very precious and
costly. Major structures like CTs, PTs, Isolators, Earth
switch, Breakers, Las are enclosed in hermetically sealed
modules filled with SF6. SF6 is the insulating media and
also the arc quenching media.

Properties of SF6 Gas:-

 Colorless
 Non - reactive
 Non - poisonous
 Non – inflammable
 High density
 Nearly inert
 High heat transferability
 Good dielectric strength
 Regenerative
Characteristics of GIS Sub Station:-

 Easy operation and maintenance free

 High reliability

 Wear and tear due to atmospheric exposure is

minimal

 Both indoor and outdoor installations

 Least concern about clearance to ground

 Flexible layout and expansion

SLD
KPTCL constructed the GIS station at white field
Export promotion industrial park [EPIP].

The station is equipped with 2*150MVA

220kv/66kv transformer. 220kv switch gear is GIS SF6
filled type [make CGL]. 66kv also connected to GIS of
66kv in downstream. XLPE underground cables are laid
for connection between 66kv GIS switch gear to 66kv
side of transformer.

220kv lines are from Hoody station. Two incomers are

running from Hoody to EPIP station.

The cables for 220kv is 1000 sq mm, XLPE insulated

type. This cable is laid for a distance of 3.65km.

By the use of GIS, the aesthetics is greatly improved

across the station space is reduced by 1/10 of the AIS.
