Shock and Drop Testing

Shock and Drop Testing

Shock tests, drop shock tests, or shock testing are commonly used to test survivability of products,
components, or subsystems to a shock event. That event can be a drop, an induced shock, or oven a
pyrotechnic shock.

SignalCalc Drop Test provides shock test equipment with a dedicated platform for acquiring shocks, fairing
(filtering), checking limits and tolerances, and performing Shock Response Spectra (SRS), or shock SRS,
calculations. Data Physics’ drop shock test software offers an intuitive user interface designed for fast and
accurate drop test capture and analysis.

Drop Testing

Drop tests have been commonly used for product fragility assessment, prototype testing, package and
cushion evaluation, and compliance with military standards. There are many different types of drop testing
ranging from freely dropped boxes to guided rail drop test hardware.

Programmable Vertical and Horizontal Shock Testing

Shock tests accurately measure the fragility of products and evaluate how they respond to specific shock
inputs. Shock test data is key information when determining if your product is capable of withstanding its
intended distribution and use environment. For any mechanical shock testing application, NVT Group
member Lansmont Corporation (http://www.lansmont.com/), builds a Shock Test System
(http://www.lansmont.com/products/shock/) to meet your needs.

Electrodynamic Shaker Shock Testing

Classical shock testing on a shaker offers an alternative to free-fall or guided drop testing. Performing
shock testing using shakers imposes physical limitations due to the available armature displacement and
shaker/amplifier power ratings. Data Physics SignalStar Classical Shock algorithms have evolved to make
the best possible use of available armature displacement and to efficiently handle the dynamics of shock
testing with both electrodynamic and hydraulic shakers. Additionally, many SignalForce Shakers
(http://www.dataphysics.com/products-and-solutions/shakers-and-accessories-signalforce.html) have
extended displacement capability to handle high level shocks.

Pneumatic Shock Testing

Pneumatic shock machines are capable of producing very high level shaped pulses in a repeatable
manner. These machines effectively lift a table and pull the table downward to impact a stop, causing a
shock. Most often these are used for very high level shock requirements.

Shipboard Shock Testing

Shipboard shock is a high impact test done on shipboard machinery. In the US, this is usually tested to the
MIL-STD-901 standard. Large shock inducing machines create a very high level impact, and machinery is
tested for survivability. Often shipboard shock is evaluated using SRS calculations.
Pyro-Shock Capture

Pyro-Shock, or Pyrotechnic Shock, is the dynamic structural shock that happens when an impact or
explosion occurs on a given structure. Pyro-shock analysis involves the capture of high frequency transient
data performing SRS testing and SRS analysis.

Whether using the standard SignalCalc Dynamic Signal Analyzer software or the dedicated SignalCalc
Drop Test software, the optional SRS analysis feature enables shock response spectrum analysis on all
input channels. The user can choose from maxi-max, primary positive, primary negative, residual positive,
residual negative, and composite SRS types with the optional use of shock response spectrum analysis.
