Technology Lesson Plan

Comparing and Contrasting Books and Movies

Grade 7

1. Technology Content Standard: Nevada Performance Indicator 1.A.8.1- The student

will be able to apply existing knowledge to independently generate new ideas, products,
or processes with digital tools.

2. Other Content Standard: State of Nevada Department of Education English Language

Arts Reading Standards for Literature Grade 7 #9- The student will be able to compare
and contrast a written story, drama, or poem to its audio, filmed, staged, or multimedia
version, analyzing the effects of techniques unique to each medium (e.g., lighting, sound,
color, or camera focus and angles in a film).

3. Objective: The student will use computer drawing software to create a Venn Diagram
comparing the movie and book of Because of Winn Dixie.

4. Materials:
a. Copy of Because of Winn Dixie for reference
b. Notes that the student took on the movie from previous days.
c. Notes on Venn Diagrams that the student took.
d. Computer with drawing program such as PowerPoint

5. Group Size: Students will work individually on this project.

6. Procedures:
a. Students have already completed reading Because of Winn Dixie and have also
watched the movie the last two class periods.
b. Display the notes on what a Venn Diagram is. Explain that a Venn Diagram is a
picture that is used to compare and contrast two things. These two circles
overlap. In the two circles, they are to write what differences the two things have
from each other and in the part that overlaps they need to put things that were the
same. Explain that Venn Diagrams will help them write compare and contrast
essays in the future and this is a good way to brain storm what should be included
in the essay.
c. The teacher will next explain that they are going to create a Venn Diagram
depicting the differences between the book Because of Winn Dixe and its movie
adaption. They are to spend the first 15-20 minutes plotting out their Venn
Diagram on paper and then they will use the computer and the drawing program
(PowerPoint) to create a digitized Venn Diagram. They will create the Venn
Diagram using 2 circles of the same size that overlap. The first circle will be the
book and the second circle will be the movie. They will then type in each circle
the differences and then in the middle they will type the similarities. They should
list a minimum of 5 things in each of the 3 sections for full points. They are
expected to also make it as visually appealing as possible using shapes, clipart,
WordArt, and computer drawings. At the end the student will ensure that they put
a header at the top with their full name and class period.

7. Assessment: Students will be graded on 5 specific things that are each worth 10 points
for a total of 50 points. They will be graded on:
a. The student listed 5 points in all three sections- the differences for both the book
and movie and the similarities section for both.
b. The student accurately compared and contrasted the book and movie.
c. The student created a visually appealing Venn Diagram.
d. The student included the proper header including their first and last name and the
class period in the upper right hand corner.
e. The student demonstrated a good grasp of what a Venn Diagram should look like
and the components that it should include.
