COUNSELORS CORNER
This week I thought we would take a look at self-esteem. Sometimes children, teens, and even adults may
have a difficult time knowing their worth and taking pride in their accomplishments. They may lack
confidence in completing school work on their own, have a difficult time making friends, adjusting to new
environments, or taking risks and trying new things.

What is Self-Esteem?
Self-esteem means you value and take pride in yourself. You know you deserve to be loved, respected, and
valued. It doesn’t mean you are perfect because no one is, but you are priceless.
Most people who have low self-esteem normally blame others for their problems, have doubts about
themselves, lack confidence and don’t see their value.

Why do I need Self-Esteem?

Good self-esteem is important because it helps you to feel good about who you are as a person. It gives you the
courage to take risks and the ability to believe in yourself. It allows you respect yourself, even when you are
not perfect and make mistakes. And when you respect yourself, adults and other kids usually respect you, too.

How to gain Self-Esteem?

Always, always hang around positive people who encourage, respect and see your good qualities. It can be a
parent, a coach, a teacher, a classmate, or a friend. These people can help you figure out how to do things or
notice great qualities and characteristics that you didn’t realize you had. The person should also be able to
give positive and constructive feedback. These characteristics are crucial to helping a person build their self-
esteem.

Now, that you know the definition of self-esteem and how to

obtain it, how do you rate? Take the test below! TEST SCORE: Total number of TRUE
