including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending

concludes the action.

2. CCSS.ELA- Literacy. R L. 1.3 Describe characters, settings, and major

events in a story, using key details.

OBJECTIVE
 Students will be able to summarize and identify the theme/moral of the story

through peer/group discussion with a 90% accuracy.

 Students will be able to describe characters, settings, and major events in a

story, using key details in a story map with 95% accuracy.


MATERIALS NEEDED
 The book “The Sneetches and Other Stories” by Dr. Seuss

 Whiteboard and markers

 Colored markers, pencils, and crayons.

 Colored paper

 Safety scissors

 Photo of Sneetches with no stars

 Story Hat Map

PROCEDURE
Introduce: Present the book The Sneetches and Other Stories by Dr. Seuss.

Ask the classroom if they notice anything about the characters on the book cover.

Show class image of Sneetches with no stars on their bellies. Ask if there is any

difference between the two. Write on board to show the differences discussed.

Read: Teacher reads The Sneetches and Other Stories aloud to classroom.

Discuss: Students will have time to reflect and address the give questions given.

Once reflection is over students will create groups of three or four and compare

their answers. After five minutes to exchange their opinions on each question; they

will share who shared similar views as them and why. The class will then discuss
initial thoughts and opinions on the plot, how the story began and ended, and what

the authors theme was.

QUESTIONS
1. How do you think the Plain Belly Sneetches felt when the star-bellied

Sneetches ignored them?

2. McBean promised to give the Plain Belly Sneetches stars, why did this not

work?

3. What happened when McBean left the Sneetches on the beach?

4. Do you think it’s right to make fun of differences or accept them?

5. Explain how you would feel if someone made fun of you for being different.

Example from the book; if you were a Plain Belly Sneetch and a Star Belly

Sneetch made fun of you for being a Plain Belly Sneetch.

ACTIVITIES
1. Students working in groups of three or four to discuss and help each other

fill out their individual story hat map worksheets. (Hands-on).

2. Students will color and cut out their story hat map and glue onto a colored

paper for the background. (Teacher will display story hat maps in

classroom).

EVALUATION
Teacher will check students’ work on the story maps for accuracy.
