Tteokbokki

Tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) is a traditional snack from Korea. The Korean assumes
that this snack came from Joseon dinasty. In Joseon period, the tteokbokki is really different
from tteokbokki as we know nowadays. The different is in its appereances and taste.
Tteokbokki in Joseon period looked more brown but modern tteokbokki looks red. The red
colour comes from sauce which is made from chilli and peppers. Other difference is
tteokbokki has plain taste in Joseon period while the modern tteokbokki is spicy.

Making the modern tteokbokki is easy and the ingredients for cooking tteokbokki is
simple. The process for making tteokbokki needs two steps. The first step is making tteok
(the cylindrical shape and rubbery texture). You need rice flour and vegetable oil to make
tteok. Rice flour and vegetables oil is boiled until it has rubbery structure. After it turns
cold, somehow make it cylindrical and slice it into approximately 5 cm for each tteok. The
second step is making the spicy sauce. The ingredients we need for making the spicy sauce
are garlic,onion, chili, chili sauce, fish oil and broth powder. Because of this simple process
for making it, tteokbokki is very popular.

Nowadays, tteokbokki is very popular in Korea and international. You can easily
find tteokbokki in every corner of the street in Korea because of its popularity. It’s
popularity brings the cultural department to develop it. Recently, the cultural department
persuade domestic bussiness man or women to change tteokbokki from street food into
food franchaise. As the result, korean fast food has got tteokbokki in their menu. The
popularity is not only in Korea but also internationally. Korean soap opera and k-reality
show contributes for spreading tteokbokki in the world. Because of this, the cultural
department develops Korean food franchaise troughout the world. In Yogyakarta, you can
find tteokbokki in Bon cheon korean fast food.
