The importance of new technologies

Modern society is constantly changing and probably one of the most important characteristics of our era have to be the
transformation, transmission and dominion of information. We live in an information society and its biggest role has been
given to new technologies. In fact, in an ideal world the proliferation of hardware and content would enable everyone access
to information.
In 1962 the philosopher Marshal McLuhan predicted that the world was entering the electronic age. He called it the “global
village” theory and said that the electronic age would be a period of time where everyone will have access to the same
information through the use of technology. In modern society, the use of internet has definitely facilitated a breaking down of
global barriers and democratisation of knowledge.
Cross-media convergence and synergy enabled my work to be distributed across multiple platforms. For example, cross-
media convergence was particularly useful in the distribution of my promotional package. This is because I was able to
upload my music video to YouTube which can be accessed on most devices with internet connection.
Similarly, the proliferation of hardware enabled me to access professional software such as InDesign, Photoshop and Premiere
Pro. Although each piece of software had both negative and positive aspects new technology enabled me to develop and
refine my skills.
The idea of global information can also be
linked to Marshal McLuhan’s prediction that
communication would transform the world into
a “global village”.

Definition – “An information society is a society

and manipulation of information is a significant
economic, political, and cultural activity.”
The information society is not only affecting
the way people interact online but it is also
requiring traditional structures to be more
flexible and participatory.
