WHAT IS ENGINEERING

Engineering is a scientific field and job that involves taking our scientific
understanding of the natural world and using it to invent, design, and build things to
solve problems and achieve practical goals. The things engineers build are called
Technology. Without that technology, the modern world simply would not exist.
We're surrounded by the work of engineers practically every moment of our lives.
Engineering is an occupation with extremely wide reach. The term
'engineering' covers many fields and, by extension, many skills. Engineers are
scientists, inventors, designers, builders and great thinkers. They improve the state of
the world, amplify human capability and make people's lives safer and easier.
Engineering skills include:

 the scientific method

 social, cultural and economic awareness
 mathematics
 biology, chemistry, physics and other areas of science
 creativity
 teamwork

Engineering disciplines cover:

 Mechanics and the construction of tools and machines of all sizes, from the
Nano scale to entire manufacturing facilities.
 The creation of cars, trains, ships, boats, aircraft and all other vehicles.
 The design and production of chemical compounds.
 Operations of businesses and cities.
 Entertainment, industry, construction, transport, healthcare, defence and more!

What Does A Typical Engineer Do? Engineers are problem solvers, organizers,
communicators, calculators and designers. They are capable of clearly defining a
problem and its relevant constraints (such as time, cost, etc.) and providing a simple
solution. A senior engineer will usually perform less technical work (calculations and
designs) but instead focus on managing a project or team of engineers.
Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop
economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between
scientific discoveries and the commercial applications that meet societal and
consumer needs.”

Difference between Science and Engineering?

Generally, Science is the study of the physical world, while Engineering
applies scientific knowledge to design processes, structures or equipment. Both
Engineers and Scientists will have a strong knowledge of science, mathematics and
technology, but Engineering students will learn to apply these principles to designing
creative solutions to Engineering challenges.

Engineering method
An engineer is an individual whose common way of thinking is to analyze and
solve problems. The way an engineer thinks is called the Engineering method.
There are four characteristics of the engineering method.
The first characteristic is to analyze, model and solve complex technical problems
that require an integrated, interdisciplinary view of problem solving.
The second characteristic is that engineers conceptualize complex systems as a
collection of smaller and simpler components. Engineers work to simplify these
systems by keeping the important components, eliminating the less important and
then using mathematical relationships to describe the important characteristics of the
system. Engineers breakdown the system in to simpler components and then in
essence take the problem apart, not physically but intellectually and central to the
way engineers think is quantification.
The third characteristic of the engineering method is the development and use of
mathematical simulation models, such models become the engineers’ tool for
examining, understanding, visualizing and designing complex systems.
The final engineering method is synthesis and design. Engineers design useful
devices, products or systems within a broad context of users, organizations or
communities. In this process engineers must take into account factors such as
reliability, safety, flexibility, economy and sustainability.

Many people think that engineering is just about liking math and science, that
is a components of it but an engineer doesn't sit in a cubicle doing calculations all
day, engineers work in multidisciplinary teams, they need very good communication
skills, interpersonal skills and problem solving skills. If you’re thinking of
communication skills, you’re not only dealing with other engineers, you may be
dealing with public officials, the general public at large and your client, so you really
have to be able to explain your project to them and your solution to it.
