EDITOR’S LETTER

Dear Readers,
As you pull away the plastic wrap on this month’s issue, you would have noticed
that CONFABULATION is now renamed The Pocket Arts Guide (TPAG).

The name change is reflective of our continuing efforts to become more

accessible to the general public while still holding the interest of our current
pool of sophisticated art lovers.

TPAG aims to provide local audience an easy-to-understand, non-exclusive

coverage of various arts events and seeks to educate and inform those new to
the arts. Topics will range from the traditional fine arts such as paintings and
sculptures to antiquities, the performing arts, installations, as well as film
and photography.

TPAG also boasts of the most comprehensive pull-out art map in Singapore.
This enables readers to have a fuss-free art walk around Singapore’s Art and
Heritage District, as well as explore off-town art troves such as Dempsey,
Wessex Estate and Holland Village.

From time to time, we will invite the best in the field to work with us to
release Special Focus Issues that delve into a particular subject matter. These
Guest Editors explore the designated topic at length while allowing readers
a peek into their world. Invited Guest Editors included Jason Lim for the
Performing Arts Special Focus in April 2010 and Vidhya Gnana Gouresan
for a future Indian Art Special Focus for October 2010.

This month, we put together a preview of the upcoming art fairs and speak
to a few gallery directors on their participation. We will kick start October
with ARTSingapore (8th – 11th). Art Expo Malaysia will be taking place
from 28th October till 1st November while Affordable Art Fair will run from
the 19th to the 21st of November. Gallery directors of Cape of Good Hope Art
Gallery, Pop and Contemporary Fine Art, S.bin Art Plus and Utterly Art
tell us more about their participation in said art fairs. On the 18th, we will
celebrate the launch of our collaborative Community Arts issue between TPAG
and Social Creatives at Black Earth Museum.

Here’s to a busy last quarter and to you, our faithful readers.

The exhibition is an intriguing showcase of Singapore-based

Alpana Vij’s subtly-expressive and highly-sensitive portraits
of women of seemingly neutral temperaments. The artist
acquires inspiration through the search for the element of raw,
unassuming co-existence in the presence of commonality in
human existence. Alpana Vij holds a Fine Arts degree from the
College of Art, New Delhi (India).

Both artists create works using a combination of collage and

painting on canvas. Collage materials chosen range from fabric
to recycled packaging material. Ping Ping paints in water-
soluble oils and Ziwei paints in acrylic. Despite working in similar
mediums, each artist has a distinctive style captured through
the choice of collage material used, the manner in which collage
and painting are incorporated, and the selection of subject
matter. Ping Ping’s works are inspired by nature and family,
while Ziwei’s are based on sites of memory that she reinvents
as symbols.

Vibha Galhotra’s first solo exhibition in Singapore, “Intruder”

comprises a collection of 10 new digital prints on canvas.
Using photography, sculptures, wall texts and props, this body
of work aims to recreate the empty and desolate being of the
day after terror. This series of staged photographs, shot in ‘old
city’ locations around the world, addresses the experience
of fear and abandonement one encounters in a once secure
neighbourhood that has turned into deserted space caused by
an act of terror. Through the medium of photography, Vibha
documents the silence and void created in such spaces and
questions the sense of security we have today.

GERMAN ART

I n the 1920s, Platte was at the centre of the European art

scene and exhibited alongside the likes of Picasso, Jawlensky,
Kandinsky, Klee and Matisse. Interested in different cultures
and religions, Platte studied China and explored Buddhism.
So deep was his interest in Jewish culture and religion that he
taught himself Hebrew.

Platte had a close friendship with the artist Alexej von

Jawlensky, through whom he met the noted art collector and
dealer, Ms Emmy Esther (Galka) Scheyer. She brought the
works of the Blue Four - Jawlensky, Kandinsky, Feininger and
Klee - to prominence with a tour of America. In 1927, she
arranged an exhibition entitled European Modernists in Los
Angeles with Platte among the featured artists (catalogue
attached). Galka Scheyer also collected Platte’s work. The
respect was mutual; Platte painted a portrait of Ms Scheyer
in her honour (portrait attached).

But Platte’s work became another of the many casualties of

the rise of fascism in Europe and World War II. His art
was considered ‘’degenerate’’ by the Nazis, removed from
museums and destroyed. He was banned from exhibiting but
continued to work in secret in his attic. In 1943, however,
he saw his secret studio and paintings go up in flames in an
Allied firebomb raid. His only son died a few months later in
the war. But Platte survived, continuing to create for the next
40 years, developing new techniques with his wax paintings
and fire collages.

An exhibition of core works from his estate will start at Art

Trove’s gallery in Waterloo Street on Sunday, October 3. Mrs.
Christina Rau will be a special guest at the exhibition’s official
opening event a few days later, which will also coincide with
the release of a new book on the artist. Mrs. Rau is the wife
of the late former German president, Dr. Johannes Rau, who
was an avid collector of Platte’s work.

Art Trove director Nicolai von Uexküll-Güldenband said

he intends to keep Platte’s main works together in a core
collection and give it proper exposure. The collection will be

Burton Morris
Making the Future go Pop!

S o who is Burton Morris? Burton Morris was born in

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1964, the birthplace of Pop
Art legends Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. From childhood
Burton loved to draw and create and tried to emulate the art of
cartoons and comic books. Thanks to his parents, who took him
on regular trips to the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, Burton was introduced to the wonderful world
of art!

It was from here that Burton acquired special admiration

and interest in the work of the great 1960`s Pop Artists, in
particular Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. It was their use
of colour, subject and composition that inspired Burton along
the path which his artwork travels today.

Like the late Pop Artist Keith Haring, Morris felt an early
attraction to Belgian artist Pierre Alechinsky’s paintings that
resemble fantastic comic strips. Both artists saw the Belgian’s
large exhibition in the International Series, again, at the
Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, in 1977. Today, Burton
still draws his inspiration from cartoons, comic books and
everyday life in general.

Morris earned his bachelor of fine arts degree at Carnegie

Mellon University in 1986 and upon graduating worked in
advertising as an art director, creating television commercials.
It was then that he began developing his post-Pop drawings.

Burton established the “Burton Morris Studios” in 1990. That

year he began making his small post-Pop icons more impressive
by enlarging them. He also began to tighten his brushwork into
his present day precise style. He would choose one subject per

Affordable Art Fair:

Art for everyone
19.11.10 - 21.11.10 /
F1 Pit Building, Singapore
Text: Viviana Mejía / Fair Manager, Affordable Art Fair

T he Affordable Art Fair Singapore is a groundbreaking

concept of purchasing art in a way that is accessible,
educational, affordable and helpful. From art lovers, to young
or versed collectors, everyone can find a way to embrace their
newfound interest or passion in art.

Staged all over Europe, the United States, Australia and for
the first time in Asia with Singapore as it’s inaugural country,
the Fair is one of a kind. “We are excited to hold the first
Affordable Art Fair in Asia in Singapore. A dynamic city, with
strong focus on the arts, it is the perfect location for us to work
with galleries from all over Asia, as well as from Europe and
Australia. It is an exciting time for art in Singapore and AAF
will be a key part of the change that is occurring”, explains Paul
Matthews AAF Development Director.

Its founder William Ramsay developed this idea in 1999 in

London in order to facilitate an environment where people
could buy contemporary art without being excluded because of
their lack of art knowledge or price limitations. 11 years have
passed and the Affordable Art Fair has developed into a brand
that continues to expand and has promoted new audiences to
venture into the art market.

The Affordable Art Singapore will have about around

60 galleries from Singapore, Asia, Europe and Australia
showcasing their art works featuring emerging artists to mid-
career established artists. The main objective is to draw people
who are not regular visitors to galleries as well as those who
are. Therefore, seminars, art demonstrations and art workshops

“Sotheby’s Institute of art-Singapore are
extremely pleased and honoured to support the
Affordable Art Fair as their educational partner.
We believe that the Affordable Art Fair, along
with other initiatives will certainly help to raise the
profile of visual arts in Singapore. The Affordable
Art Fair already has an international reputation,
and specifically occupies a unique niche in the
visual arts industry. They offer the opportunity
for individuals to buy and own visual art without
investing thousands and thousands of dollars.
This gives a fantastic opportunity for nascent
collectors to be involved in the art world, and as
such we see this playing a vital role in the overall
education and development of a meaningful art
scene.”
