AES 2009 Field Development Project Fall 2013, Petrel Training Course
Students who are eligible to participate in the course AES 2009 Field Development Project (FDP) will need to use the
computer package PETREL extensively over the 6-week duration of the course. PETREL is an extensive geomodeling tool
from Schlumberger which is used for a wide range of applications from seismic interpretation to reservoir simulations.
Since most students have little or no prior experience of working in PETREL we have observed that in the past years this
has been an impediment to some students. This year we strongly urge and encourage students who qualify/plan to
participate in the FDP starting in September 2013 acquire basic knowledge in PETREL. To achieve familiarity with PETREL
we recommend that students follow a few PETREL instructional videos provided by Schlumberger. The videos are strictly
meant to be viewed for educational purposes only and must not be shared with others (our license with Schlumberger
depends on this). The videos are available on the Blackboard page for AES2009 Field Development Project (2012-2013).
Under “Course Documents”, you will find a survey link “Agreement with terms concerning use of PETREL videos”, on
completion of this survey you will get access to the folder containing the PETREL training videos. You can follow these
videos at your own time. If you did not follow that course this year and are not yet on the Blackboard page it is easy to
register for the site. In addition practise PETREL projects will also be provided via the same Blackboard site so that you can
obtain hands-on experience working with PETREL.
Many students, especially those in Petroleum Engineering track, find that there are gaps in the teaching schedule in the
fourth period. We strongly recommend that you spend some time before the beginning of the FDP familiarizing yourself
with PETREL through the provided videos and practise projects, which will be very helpful and useful for you not only
during the FDP but also in your future careers.
For those of you who are interested in testing yourself after viewing the videos and the practise projects, you can register
for the Schlumberger PETREL Virtual Internship Program. In this program you will be shown the same videos but you have
the chance to test your newly acquired skills on an actual data set which will be monitored by Schlumberger. If you
manage to successfully complete all the tasks you will receive a certificate from Schlumberger for having completed the
PETREL Virtual Internship. This internship requires roughly 15-20 hours (work time) to be completed.
If you have any questions regarding this training course or how to get started with the Virtual Internship Program you can
contact Rahul-Mark Fonseca at r.m.fonseca@tudelft.nl .

Very high resolution remotely sensed images provide valuable information to researchers. With their availability, there has
been much interest to detect and model man-made objects from such imageries. Manual generation of this information is
too much tedious and sometimes prone to errors. Therefore, developing automated methods is an important research
topic. Unfortunately, the solution is not straightforward by using well-known image processing and pattern recognition
methods. Hence, advanced algorithms should be developed to detect land structures and to estimate 3D models
automatically. Generated results can be also used for developing automatic 3D change detection and disaster simulation
applications.
In this seminar, we will talk about some of our novel approaches for automatic detection of urban objects from remotely
sensed images using local invariant features, machine learning and automatic shape extraction methods. Besides, we will
also see some of our methods for estimating 3D urban object models from remotely sensed images.
