Equations from Proportional Tables

The document describes how to create equations from tables where the variables are proportional. It provides examples of finding the constant of proportionality (k) by dividing the dependent variable (y) by the independent variable (x) for a given data point. An equation is then formed using y=kx to represent the relationship between the variables for the entire data set. Three examples are worked through to demonstrate this process.

Equations from Tables

Notes
If you are given a table, and the relationship between the
independent variable and dependent variable are
proportional, you can create an equation that represents
the relationship between both variables.

y = kx

x y
k = y/x
2 8 k = 8/2
3 12 k=4
11 44
y = 4x
Create an equation to represent the relationship in the
table.

x y
10 15
k = 15/10 = 1.5
23 34.5
98 147 y = 1.5x
Practice
Create an equation to represent the relationship in the
table.

# of donuts Total cost ($)

6 5.94
k = 5.94/6 = 0.99
12 11.88
24 23.76
y = 0.99x
Find the constant of proportionality (k) for the table
below, and create an equation:

# of minutes played 16 20 40 44
Points scored 12 15 30 33

k = y/x

k = 12/16
k = 0.75
y = 0.75x
