Surface Area Calculation Guide

The document defines surface area as the amount of space covering all surfaces of a 3D shape. It provides formulas to calculate the surface area of rectangular prisms as SA = 2(lw) + 2(wh) + 2(hl) and of cubes as SA = 6(l^2). The document explains that you can create a net of the shape to help with surface area calculations and provides examples of calculating surface areas of given shapes.

Surface Area

Surface Area: The amount of space covering all of the

surfaces of a 3D shape.

To find the surface area of a shape, find the area of all

faces of the shape, and add them up

SA (rectangular prisms) = 2 (lw) + 2(wh) + 2(hl)
SA (cubes) = 6(l2)

You can also create a net for the shape to help with your
calculations
Try It

How many square centimeters of wrapping paper will

Dennis need in order to wrap the gift?

SA= 2(lŸw)+2(wŸh) + 2(hŸl)

SA= 2(9Ÿ4)+2(4Ÿ2) + 2(2Ÿ9)
SA= 2(36)+2(8) + 2(18)
SA = 72 + 16 + 36
V =124 cm2
Dennis will need at least 124 square centimeters of
wrapping paper.
Practice

Find the surface area of the rectangular prism:

SA= 2(6) + 2(20) + 2(7.5)

SA = 12 + 40 + 15
SA = 67

The surface area is 67 square units.

Practice

Alice is building a caterpillar habitat for some caterpillars she

found in her back yard. She plans to cover all sides of the habitat
with screen so that the caterpillars can get plenty of fresh air.
What is the total amount of screen Alice will need for her
habitat?

SA= 2(6) + 2(3) + 2(2)

SA = 12 + 6 + 4
SA = 22

Alice will need 22 square feet of screen for the habitat.

Surface Area of Other Shapes

To find the surface area of a shape, find the area of all

faces of the shape, and add them up

SA (triangular prisms) = 2 ( ½ bh) + 2(wh) + 1(bw)
SA (cylinders) = 2(πr2) + 2πrh

You can also create a net for the shape to help with your
calculations
Practice

Jed’s tent is a triangular prism. What is the total surface

area, including the floor, of his tent?

SA= 2(½(1.7)(2)) +
2((2)(3)) + (2)(3)

SA= 2(1.7) +
2(6) + (6)

SA = 3.4 + 12 + 6

SA = 21.4

SA =21.4 m2
