The Concept of Values
Values refer to widely held conception by
members of a given society or group of people
as acceptable and beneficial.
 Values are things, objects, activity, animate or
in animate that are cherished and held in high
esteem.
Values can influence behaviour either
Positively or Negatively E.g. Value for time.
 Value is a core component of the people’s
culture (way of life).
Common Examples of Values
Africans are known to place high value on
children. In some societies male children are
preferred due to access to inheritance.
Nine months after wedlock, questions may
start coming for couples if children are not
forthcoming.
Unlike western societies where marriage is
consummated for companionship, procreation
is the primary essence of marriage in many
African Societies
Common Examples of Values
In the western societies both hardwork and
pleasure (Holidays) are of great value.
The value of hardwork among the yoruba and
Igbo culture is well explained in the preceding
Yoruba adage…
“ma fi owuro sere ore mi, ise la fi ndeni giga”
Translated as : Do not play in the morning or
with your childhood, you can only become an
achiver through hardwork
The concept of personal values
As the name implies, personal values are
unique to individuals and group.
What may be acceptable and cherished as
personal value to Mr. A may be entirely
different from that of Mr. B
Personal values describes the beliefs, action
and inactions of an individual or group
It assist individuals or group set standard,
expectations and rules for behaviour and
living.
Examples of Personal Values
Honesty
Humility
Discipline
Diligence
Respect
Obedience
Dependability and Reliability
Honesty
Another name for honesty is integrity,
accountability.
A honest person is truthful
Transparent
Not deceitful
Biblical examples of honest characters include:
- Joseph
- King David
Humility
Humility is sometimes used interchangeably
As Meekness.
This is one personal value that leads to
greatness and a life outstanding
accomplishments.
Notable Biblical Characters associated with
Humility/Meekness include : Moses, Abraham
Joseph etc.
Personal values in life style formation
Our personal value define our character
Our character determine our altitude
Every man must take personal responsibility
Every man is responsible for the outcome of
his/her life
The choices we make will either make us or

 Determination- to be resolute and focussed.
It means possessing a sense of mission in the
delivery of a given task.
Apostle Paul was determined to obtain the
prize for the high calling of God in Christ Jesus
- Philippians 3: 14
Discipline –
Diligence
3 D’s of Personal Values Development
Discipline – This means operating as
demanded not as convenient.
The rules and regulations of Covenant
University as stated in the student’s handbook
are to guide you and help maximize your
destiny as student here and later in life.
3 D’s of Personal Values Development
Diligence- implies a committed, creative and
tireless hardworker.
Every high flyer is known as a hardworker.
There is dignity in labour
Nothing works like hardwork as explicitly
stated in Proverbs 22:29
Personal values and CU Core Values
As students of CU, your personal values must align
with the 7 core values of the University namely :
1. Spirituality
2. Possibility mentality
3. Capacity Building
4. Integrity
5. Responsibility
6. Diligence
7. Sacrifice
Uniqueness of CU Core values
Spirituality – this emphasizes Godly principles
and the fear of God in all areas of operation at
Covenant University. “Spirituality is our
greatest asset in the journey of life”.

our destinies to be actualized, we must possess

Capacity Building
We encourage our students in this platform to
imbibe the virtue of skill development.

The skill of yesterday is not enough to cope in
today’s changing world.
Additional skill (TMC, EDS, CLDS etc.) is a plus
and added advantage.
Integrity
The value of integrity to outstanding success
and fulfillment of destiny cannot be overlooked.
Integrity simply connotes being accountable,
honest and truthful at all times
Are you dependable, reliable and accountable?
It takes the fear of God to demonstrate the
virtue of integrity
Concluding Remarks
As you depart from this lecture here are some food for
thoughts
 As Kings and Queens in Hebron are redeemed to reign
and take the lead
 Shine like a star that you are
 Discover your eagle nature and begin soaring as
ordained by God from the beginning
 Until we change the way we think, it will be impossible
to change the way we live.
