Pros of Tampons
#1: Size: Easily put in a purse or pocket
to hide with different absorbent sizes to
hide a heavy flow also.
#2: No Wet Feeling: Since they do not sit
on the underwear, you do not get the
feeling of wetness like you do with pads.
#3: Freedom Of Movement: Swimming
isn’t very possible while wearing a pad
compared to a tampon.
#4: You Can't Feel Them: It’s nice to
forget one less stressful thing in your life.
If inserted correctly a tampon should not
be felt!
Cons of Tampon
#1: They're Easier To Forget About: And
dangerous to sleep in
#2: Getting the Size Wrong: More
absorbent and bigger the tampon is, the
increase risk of infection and chance of
irritating tissue
Common signs of TSS (Toxic
Shock Syndrome)
TSS has much organ involvement
commonly going along:
- watery diarrhea
- rash similar to a sunburn
- acute febrile (fever)
symptoms
- hypotension and more
In some cases, intubation, dialysis
and immunoglobulin therapy is
necessary for some patients also
(Riess, 2000).
Pros of Pads
#1: Protection against Stained

clothes
#2: No Insertion Needed: No pain or harm
to your body
#3: No Toxic Shock Syndrome: Risk of
infections like UTIs, yeast and TSS are
decrease compared to tampons
#4: Safe For Overnight: Bleeding occurs
day and night and tampons need
changed every 4-6 hrs to prevent
serious infection
Cons of Pads
#1: Crinkles and Wrinkles: Pads can look,
feel and sound more noticeable than
tampons
#2: Visibility: Pads prevent you from
wearing certain clothes so you don’t show
off your ‘time of the month’ in public
Menstrual Cups
In 2014, the feminine hygiene industry
made a $3-billion-dollar profit. A reusable
cup costing $30-40 dollars can last years
if washed and given proper care (Hu,
2015).
The benefits:
- Less waste compared to tampons/pads
- No dyes, odor neutralizers, scents, or
other chemicals compared to other
products
-Can be changed less frequently (every
12 hours or more if needed)
-Does not dry up the vagina, decreasing
your change of infection
-Less likely to leak
-You cannot feel it once it is in
-You can swim in it!
Mooncup Study
A brand of menstrual cup was introduced
to 53 female volunteers. All healthy, they
agreed to record 3 cycles with the
Mooncup and record how frequently it
was changed and the leakage over the 3
cycles. With a total of 126 cycles of a
baseline, 71 cycles with a Mooncup was
recorded. During at least one menstrual
period, the Mooncup leaked 0.5 times
less frequently than regular sanitary
protection and had to be changed 2.8
times less frequently. 55% said they
would use it (Stewart, Geer, Powell,
2010).
