Assignment 02

Project Based Learning - Group Assignment

Note: Refer Appendix 01 which is the same scenario in Assignment 01.

Purpose of this Assignment

The aim of the Project Based Learning Group Project is to provide an opportunity for the
students to participate in real life projects in a competitive atmosphere similar to that
prevails in the industry. It also intends to provide experience in utilizing the theory; design
and practice learned so far for real engineering applications. Therefore, it is expected that
each member (engineer) will undertake activities of Group Project completely and make a
noteworthy contribution to the successful completion of the project.

Task 01

Do the following project related activities. This should represent an overall introduction to
the project work, highlighting the component of individual contribution from each member.

A. Plan group roles and activities- Your project team should consist of following members.
a. Project Manager & Deputy Project Manager
b. Architect
c. Civil Engineer (Consultant & Contractor)
d. Quantity Surveyor
e. Draftsman
f. Accountant

Each team member should be aware of their own duties & responsibilities and other members
towards the project. Prepare a Client Brief and attach a list of names of individual members
responsible for each item/sub task. (10 marks)

Task 02

a. Prepare the main work/project breakdown structure with all main targets/tasks.
(4marks)

b. Identify the main project constraints and explain procedures for assessing feasibility
(Technical, financial, etc.) and constructability criteria.
(4marks)

c. Prepare a Health, Safety & Welfare plan for the proposed project along with a site layout
plan.
(4marks)

d. Propose a suitable construction programme and cash flow diagram for this construction
project.
(4marks)

e. Prepare the final design proposal to meet the agreed client’s specification.
(4 Marks)

f. Explain your individual contribution to the ongoing project work and attach a copy (PDF
Version) of emails of project related activities with the assignment.
(10 Marks)
g. Evaluate the project by making recommendations for improvement.
(15 Marks)

Task 03

Present all above details in a report and also present the finalized project proposal.

A. Final Presentations

This will be arranged on the last session tentatively end of March 2018. Each project group
(Company) will be allocated a 40 minutes Power Point presentation time (To be used fully),
backed by transparencies if necessary. Individuals should explain their tasks performed. Extra
5 minutes will be given for question time. References should be made to the specific
methodologies followed and guidelines adhere to. Scope of the activities performed and plan
ahead (if necessary) need to be presented clearly.

The questions may be from or related to the tasks performed by the other members of the
group as well, so each and every member is expected to have a thorough and holistic idea of
the entire project development process.

Interactive participation of members from either group is encouraged to constructively
comment/criticize and to propose further improvements, within the question time allocated.

Marks will be allocated for presentation skills and for the contents. See the attached sheet for
the breakdown of the marks.
(30 Marks)

B. Project Report

Completion and submission of group report (typed, together with necessary sketches/draft
drawings, aptly detailed following relevant guidelines).
The main text maybe presented in common (should summarize project development to date,
including records of project emails and minutes of meetings), followed by brief individual
reports on individual contribution (The group work in common and individual contribution
from each member will be assessed).
(15 Marks)

not limited to the given list:
A. Develop the project scope and implementation of individual tasks.

i. Individual role and task.

ii. Overall introduction (with maps, related technical information etc.)
iii. Concept stage for the major development envisaged (development of concept
considering the location, access, parking needs, etc.).

B. Project feasibility, project development and preliminary design.

i. Feasibility study to indicate the financial viability. (5 minutes)

ii. Initial Environmental Examination or EIA for the project. (5 minutes)

iii. Development of preliminary design of the project (both concept and layouts).
(5 minutes)

iv. Design of services and preparation of preliminary/detailed drawings. Highlight

all Green/Eco-friendly concepts and features to be incorporated. (5 minutes)

v. Preliminary design of super structure (for selected critical members). Design

of access roads and preparation of drawings. (5 minutes)

vi. Preparation of necessary Auto CAD drawings and rebar schedules. (5 minutes)
