Dear Students and Parents,

This month the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT)
will be administered to all students who are identified as English Language Learners. This test is
a New York State Department of Education requirement and is given each spring to all students
of English as a New Language.

The purpose of this test is to measure students’ progress in English proficiency but this test does
not take the place of the Common Core ELA Regents exam. Please note that no dictionaries may
be used for this test and no test preparation is necessary.

The following information pertains to the speaking portion of the examination:


The speaking session of the test lasts approximately 15 minutes and will be administered on an
on an individual basis between April 18th thru April 26th. Students will be notified by their ENL
teachers about when their speaking test will be administered.

The following information pertains to the listening, reading and writing portions of the
examination:
The listening, reading and writing portions of the exam will be administered on the following
days:
 Thursday, May 3rd periods 4-6
 Tuesday, May 8th periods 4-6
 Thursday, May 10th periods 4-6

NYSESLAT results will be available in September 2018. It is very important that your son or
daughter is present on the testing days noted above. We are confident that the students will
perform to the best of their ability and we will do all we can to ensure their success. Please do
